Norse Volleyball Falls To Marion

The Northfield volleyball team opener their season hosting Marion Tuesday, falling to the Giants 20-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-23, 12-15.

The Norse got ogg to a slow start and trailed 6-3 before scoring 4 straight aided by an ace from Kyra Kennedy and a kill from Kenzie Baer to grab a 7-6 lead. Trailing 12-14 the Norse would struggle with the Giants 6’5” center hitter as the guest went on an 8-0 run to lead 22-12. Down 13-23 the Norse would make some noise, getting a kill and 2 aces from Kennedy and two tips from Ava Smith as the Norse scored 6 straight to close the gap to 19-23 before falling 20-25.

Northfield would get off to a good start in game two, grabbing a 6-1 lead off a kill from Haylie Faust and three Smith aces. The Giants would go to their taller front line and close the gap to 14-11 when Faust and Madison Shrider recorded kills to open a 20-11 lead. Kennedy would drain a kill and two aces down the stretch as the Norse won the game 25-14 to make it 1-1.

Marion would jump out to a 10-1 lead in game three, holding a double digit lead  until 18-8 when the Norse started to chip away. Faust would record three kills with Smith scoring on a tip as the lead closed to 14-20. Marion was up 17-24 when Kennedy combined with Baer for three kills to make it 20-24 before the Giants took the game 20-25.

Game four would never have a gap of more than 4 points the entire game as the Giants led the first half. The Norse led 17-16 before getting kills from Baer and Faust to open a 23-19 lead before Marion scored 4 straight to tie the score. The Norse would then take advantage of two Marion errors to take game four 25-23.

In game five it looked as though the youthful Norse were up for the task, as they led from the start and held a 12-9 lead when Marion ran off six straight points to take the game 12-15 and the match 2-3.

Northfield won the junior varsity contest 25-14, 25-16.
