Black and Gold close Chicago trip 1-1

CHICAGO, ILL. – The freshman tandem of forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) and midfielder Nick Surber (Hebron, Ind.) each tallied two shot attempts, topping individual statistics for Manchester University Sunday, Sept. 3.

The two combined for four of the Spartans’ 11 shot attempts, none of which got past a 90-minute clean sheet effort of UW-Whitewater goalkeepers Chris Lucatorto and Toney Anderson. On the flip side, the No. 25-ranked Division III United Soccer Coaches’ Warhawks’ offense managed to find the back of the Spartans’ net five times among 26 shot attempts for a 5-0 victory on Illinois Institute of Technology’s Stuart Field.

MU’s goalkeeping combination of sophomore Justin Winterboer (Indianapolis, Ind.) and senior Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) gathered eight saves in the face of a 26-11 shots disadvantage. Forman’s five saves gave him 12 for the weekend, while Winterboer ended with three.

Manchester University (1-1) begins its home season Friday, Sept. 8, welcoming Blackburn College of Carlinville, Ill., for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
