Spartans begin home stand, pick up two wins versus Grace

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Freshman Karly Eichenauer (North Manchester, Ind.), at number four singles, and the senior combination of Katy Ashpole (Leesburg, Ind.) and Katie Peden (North Manchester, Ind.) headlined the Spartans’ non-conference dual against nearby Grace College Thursday, Sept. 21.

Battling through hot and muggy conditions at MU’s outdoor courts, Eichenauer moved over the .500 mark in singles action for the season behind an 8-4 decision against the Lancers’ Shelby Bankson. Ashpole and Peden kept their unbeaten string intact at number three doubles, giving up just one game win to Bankson and Samantha Meyer in an 8-1 final.

Coach Eric Christiansen’s squad was on the verge of making things much closer than a 7-2 defeat. Senior Mariam Ali (Giza, Egypt) battled to five game victories at number two singles, and freshman Avis McGovern (North Vernon, Ind.) pushed her singles’ clash at number five to extra points before falling 9-7.

The Black and Gold (1-2) move back into Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 23. Earlham College is their opponent for a 12 p.m. start.
