Hanover battle next for Spartans

Hanover College is Manchester University’s guest in the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for both programs Saturday, Sept. 30.

Match details: Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Good Field … Live audio, stats and video are available through links at www.muspartans.com, the Internet home of Manchester University athletics … Coach Corey Brueggeman’s team, sitting 4-5, gave United Soccer Coaches Great Lakes region No. 5-ranked Heidelberg University a stern test in a 1-0 defeat Sept. 26 on the road. The Panthers are 5-3 and have won three of their last four … Recent series history has been nip and tuck. Hanover was the victor in the last two meetings, but the Black and Gold won three of the previous four contests.

Spartan Shorts: The scoring attack, through nine matches, has been balanced. Freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.), who is tied for eighth in goals (three), ninth in points (eight) and stands seventh in shots (19) in the conference, leads the way for MU. Junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio), who is part of a tie for seventh in assists with Gonzalez in the HCAC, is next with a goal and two assists for four points, while junior forward Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.), senior defender/midfielder/forward Tod Oram(Crown Point, Ind.) and senior midfielder Travis Richardson (Elizabethtown, Ky.) each have a goal to their credit … Defensively, the back line of the Black and Gold has been severely tested through a rugged non-conference slate. Results have been impressive, as senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.), the reigning league Player of the Week, has registered three shutouts to date, including one against North Coast Athletic Conference power DePauw, and a 1.37 goals-against average. He is the conference leader in saves (52) and his 81.3 save percentage is third-best.

AU Rivalry Renewed: The Ravens’ women’s side comes to North Manchester, while the Spartans men’s team takes the short trip to Anderson Wednesday, Oct. 4. Match times are 3 p.m. at AU and 3:30 p.m. at MU.
