Knights Fall Short At Huntington

The Southwood boys headed to Huntington North Friday, struggling in the first half and trailing by 14 at the half before making a comeback and falling to the Vikings 49-46.

Peyton Trexler and Mitchell Geller would trade free throws to start the game before Trexler hit a three pointer to give the Knights a 4-1 lead. The Vikings would answer with a 9-0 run to end the quarter. Geller would start the run with a bucket and was followed by a Trey Williams three. Hank Pulver and Keegan Bartrom would get the final two buckets of the quarter as Huntington North led 10-4.

Geller would score the first bucket of the second quarter to extend the Vikings lead to 12-4 before Carson Blair hit for a 12-6 score. Two Pulver free throws and a three point play from Geller made it 17-11 and was followed by a Geller bucket to make it 19-6. Dallas Holmes would stop the Viking run with a bucket. Willams and Blair then traded long balls before a 6-0 run by Huntington opened a 28-11 lead. Blair would finish off the half with a half court buzzer beater as Huntington led 28-14 at the half.

The Knights would have the hot hand early in the third. Holmes would hit, followed by two Blair three’s to close the gap to 28-22 before a Geller bucket stopped the run. The Vikings led 34-26 after a Sawyer Stoltz bucket before Holmes drained a three, followed by a Trexler bucket off a steal and Blair’s fifth three to tie the score 34-34 with a quarter to go.

Ethen Roberts gave the Knights their first lead of the game to start the fourth converting an old fashion three point play before Geller did the same to tie the score. The Knights would then score the next 6 points to go up 43-37 before Zach Daugherty drained two bombs to put the Vikings up 45-43. Blair would come right back with his own three to put Southwood up 46-45 before Pulver hit, followed by two Geller free throws to give Huntington the lead back at 49-46 with 26.9 left to play. The Knighst would miss their next shot, fouling with the Vikings missing the free throw. Southwood had the ball with 3.8 left in the game, running a play to get to half court with 2.6 on the clock. The Knights set up a three point shot for Blair, but the Vikings would foul to force a free throw instead of letting Blair attempt to hit his 7th three. The free throw missed and the Vikings held on for the 49-46 win.
