The Manchester girls basketball team had a defensive plan against the #10 team in the state Saturday and executed it to upset the Northfield Lady Norse 38-27.
Northfield would grab a 2-0 lead on a bucket from Ariel Dale before a Erika Kendall free throw and two Kennedy Fierstos buckets gave Manchester a 5-2 lead. The Norse would answer with buckets from Kelsie Thomson and Ally Keaffaber to take the lead back at 7-5 before Sydney Day tied the game with two free throws. Maddie Clark and Day would trade buckets to end the quarter with the score tied 9-9.
The Squires would get buckets from Kiera Hatfield and Kendall to start the second quarter and grab a 13-9 lead before Dale hit three straight free throws, followed by buckets from Thomson and Melanie Beery to put the Norse up 16-13. A Hatfield bucket made it 16-15 before Beery hit a second time to put the Norse up 18-15 at the half.
The third quarter and the second half would be all Manchester. The Squires held the Norse to just one bucket in the third. Kendall and Fierstos would make it 19-18 Manchester early in the third and were followed by a bucket from Day before Fierstos hit again and added two free throws to open a 25-18 lead. The Norse would get their first point of the quarter off an Addi Baker free throw. With Manchester leading 27-20 Northfield would get their only bucket of the quarter when Dale hit a three as the Squires led 27-23 with a quarter to go.
Manchester would pick up their defense another notch in the fourth, holding the Norse without a bucket as they hit 6 free throws in the quarter and got buckets from Fierstos and Kendall to pull off the 38-27 win.
