Apaches Defend Home Court Against Norse

The Wabash Apaches flexed their muscle a bit vs county rival Northfield, jumping out to a 19-4 first quarter lead and defeating the Norse 80-54.

The Apaches would set the tone right from the tip, scoring the first 9 points of the game. Logan Vander Velden would get things started with a three and was followed with buckets from Trenton Daughtry, Jared Holley and Blake Gribben to lead 9-0. Kyle Reed would stop the run with a bucket for the Norse before Daughtry scored two straight buckets, followed by Dereck Vogel for a 15-2 score. Again it was Reed stopping the run before Vogel and Holley scored to make it 19-4 after one.

Luke Mattern would start the second quarter with a make from behind the arch before the Norse started to find some rhythm and chip away at the Wabash lead. Reed would score 10 points in the quarter along with Joe Halderman hitting to close the gap to 30-18 before Wabash scored the final 6 points of the quarter to lead 36-18 at the half.

The Apaches would erase any hope of a come back to start the third quarter. Vogel would convert a three point play, followed by 4 points from Daughtry and a bucket from Mattern to increase their lead to 45-18 before the Norse got on the board. Clayton Tomlinson would hit to stop the run, but it would be all Luke Mattern in the quarter, scoring 14 points, hitting two bombs. Wabash led 59-32 after three.

The Norse would out score the Apaches 22-21 in the fourth, getting 8 points from Jared Peas and long balls from Logan Peas, Nate Drancik and Tomlinson. Devin Higdon led the way for the Apaches in the quarter with 8 points as Wabash went on to win 80-54.
