Northfield defeats Wabash for sectional title

The Northfield Norse baseball team defeated Wabash 7-0 for the Lewis Cass sectional title Tuesday evening. Northfield now plays in the Wabash regional Saturday.

In the top of the 1st inning, Peyton Ross blasted a two out home run off Wabash pitcher Zack Hipskind to put Northfield up 1-0. At that point the two pitchers, Northfield’s Adam House and Hipskind settled down and after 4 innings it was still 1-0.  In the top of the 5th Northfield finally broke the ice scoring two runs on an Andrew Sheperd single and an infield grounder to go up 3-0. In the bottom of the inning Alex Hentgen singled to break up House’s no hitter. After 4 1/3 Northfield coach Tony Uggen pulled House and brought in Monday’s star Ryan Keaffaber. Keaffaber walked the first batter he faced and then hit the second to load the bases. Wabash hit a line drive to left field that was caught by Jared Swan and he fired a shot to second to double off the Apache runner and stop the threat. In the sixth with two outs, Keaffaber in his first at bat of the game hit a towering home run over the right field fence to go up 4-0. The Norse loaded the bases and then scored three runs on a throwing error to first base. In the bottom of the sixth Joey Burns started the inning with a single that was followed by a fly out and a fielders choice, leaving a runner on first. On the next pitch, Norse catcher fired a shot to first to pick off the Apache runner and end the inning. Zach Sailors pitched the 7th for Wabash, striking out three and giving up a single and a walk. Austin Sheperd pitched the final inning for the Norse, striking out one and forcing two groung balls to give the Norse the victory.

Coach Uggen ”

I’m proud of the kids. They’ve worked very hard to earn this title.  They are a great group of kids and they are enjoyable to be around.  I’m glad we have at least another week with them.  They’re fun to watch.  I hope the community comes out Saturday to support this team in the Wabash Regional. ”   Next game:  Versus Adams Central at 11am Saturday at Wabash Regional.  Winners play at 7:30pm
