Manchester Downs Mississinewa

The Manchester Squire football team picked right where they left off from last year, winning. The Squires defeated Mississinewa 34-19 Friday night in a dominating fashion.

Manchester took the opening kickoff and marched 81yds down the field, mainly behind Preston Penrod, with Penrod punching it in from 5yds out with 6:06 to play in the first quarter. The quarter ended with the Squires leading 7-0.

In the second quarter Mississinewa marched down the field only to have the Manchester defense come up big. With 8:54 to go Josh Amick blocked an Indian field goal attempt. The Squires moved on offense with their trio of backs, Penrod, Mazric Shambarger and Austin Flack.  With 5:05 left quarterback Logan Brunn connected with Anthony Saunders for a 21yd TD pass. The PAT was missed and Manchester led 13-0. After a TD saving tackle from Derek Self on the insuing kickoff the Squire defense rose big again. Flack and Aric Howard recorded a sack and the Indian offense gave the Squires the ball with less than two minutes remaining. Penrod scampered 25yds and with 1:24 to go Brunn hit penrod for a 47yd scoring strike, PAT good and the Squires led 20-0. After another great kick return by the Indians they quickly hit pay dirt to make it 20-6. With 8.1 seconds remaining Penrod gave a couple great moves and jolted down the middle 69yds for a TD and a 27-6 half time lead.

Both defenses came out strong in the third quarter, holding the other team scoreless until Penrod went 20yds for another TD and a 34-6 Squire lead.

Mississinewa struck quickly in the forth quarter, scoring from 2yds out with 9:46 to play to make it 34-13. The Indian defense held and again with 4:42 to go punched one in from 10yds and it was 34-19.  Manchester would run a couple series of downs and then down the ball to end the game.

Penrod had 22 carries for 220yds. Shambarger 7 carries for 54yds, Flack 6 carries, 24yds, Gable 4 carries, 10yds, Brunn 7 carries, 21yds. Passing, Brunn 6 for 11, 1int, 2TD.  Receiving, Saunders 2 catches for 27yds, Penrod 1 for 47yds. Defense : Flack 1 sack 2 fumble rec.  Howard & Sellers 1 sack.

In other county action Wabash lost to Taylor 19-14, Southwood lost to Southern Wells 30-14 and Northfield defeated Bluffton 21-6. Hopefully Saturday we will get some stats for all the games.
