Northfield Football Season Comes To An End

The Northfield football team had not won a sectional game since 1996, so playing in the second round was unchartered territory. They traveled to Berne to play South Adams who had beaten North Miami the week before and was on a five game winning streak. Unfortunately for Northfield the South Adams streak continued, falling to the Starfires 33-23.

To start the game, Northfield fumbled on their first play with South Adams recovering on the 27. Northfield’s defense come up big and held the Starfires to a field goal, 3-0. On the Norse second possession they were forced to punt after a small drive. South Adams threatened again, but had to settle for another field goal and a 6-0 lead.

In the second quarter the Norse had moved the ball, but stalled and were forced to make a decision with a 4th and 1 from the 48. The right decision was made with a little dump pass up the middle to Justin Parker who scampered 48yds for the touch down. Roser’s extra point was good and Northfield lead 7-6 with 11:52 left in the half. After the kick off on South Adams first play they busted loose a long touch down run to put the Starfires back up 13-7. Northfield would try to answer the call, but on their third play fumbled the ball away again. South Adams would start a march, looking as though they were going to score when Joe Freiden picked off a pass to stall the drive on the 11. Northfield would only move the ball to the 35 and was forced to punt, giving the Starfires one more shot. South Adams capitalized on the opportunity, scoring with 1:22 remaining to take a 19-7 half time lead.

Northfield kicked off to start the second half and it only took South Adams 11 seconds to score, running it in on their first play of the half to take a 26-7 lead. Northfield, being a little shaken after the quick TD went three and out and was forced to punt. The two defenses held and with 3:38 left in the quarter the Norse had the ball. After gaining 16yds, Gottschalk’s pass was picked off with 2:47 to go.

At 10:45 in the forth quarter South Adams pushed it in the end zone again to take a 33-7 lead. Northfield would not give up, mounting a drive that was capped off with Gottschalk hitting Joe Freiden for an 8yd TD reception to make it 33-15 with the 2pt conversion. With 1:25 left, Northfield executed an onside kick. On four quick plays, Gottschalk threw a backwards pass to Jared Kirtlan who hit Parker for a 22yd TD reception. The two point conversion was good and it was 33-23 with 54 seconds to play. The Norse attempted another onside kick, but this time the Starfires were ready for it, recovering it and then kneeling to run the clock out for the win.

Manchester, the other Wabash county team left in the sectional was defeated by Ft Wayne Bishop Luers 69-0.
