Lady Norse Battles #14 Eastern

The Northfield girls varsity basketball team battled #14 Eastern for three quarters Tuesday night. The young Lady Norse just couldn’t hang with the Comets for four quarters, losing to Eastern 60-38.

Northfield starts two freshmen and at points has three freshmen on the floor. At times they played brilliant and at times they played like freshmen. That one quarter of freshmen ball cost the Norse the game, but the great thing is these freshmen and sophomores are gelling for a bright future.

In the first quarter Northfield stayed close, down 13-5 at the end of the quarter. Freshman Sydney Reed and freshman Katie Stephan had had Northfield’s two buckets.

The second quarter was where you could see the bright future. Eastern started the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 19-5 lead. Northfield gathered it’s composure and behind the shooting of Sydney Eltzroth went on a 9-0 run. Eltzroth hit three buckets, one being a three to draw the Norse to within 19-14. After an Eastern bucket the Lady Norse closed out the half with a 7-0 run ti tie the score at 21 at the half. During the last run, freshman Katie Stephan connected on two buckets, one being a three at the end of the quarter. Eltzroth had 9 points in the quarter.

Northfield came out of the half fired up with Stephan stealing the ball and going in for a layup to give Northfield their first lead at 23-21. After going down two, senior Morgan Peas hit two free throws to tie it again at 25. Eastern built the lead to 31-25 before Eltzroth hit to keep them close. That would be the last bucket the Norse would see for a while as their wheels fell off and Eastern went on a 15-0 run to end the quarter for a 46-27 lead.

Northfield played with the Comets again in the fourth quarter, with Eastern out scoring them just 14-11. Eltzroth and Peas scored all of Northfield’s points in the fourth. Eltzroth had 7 and Peas 4. Eastern went on to win 60-38.

Northfield was lead by Sydney Eltzroth with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Katie Stephan had 9 points, 5 assist and 4 steals. Morgan Peas had 6 points. Sidney Reed had 3 points and Shannon Brown had 2 points.

Northfield committed 30 turn overs and had 24 rebounds and 7 steals.
