Lady Knights Win Tough One Over Mississinewa

The Southwood girls basketball team traveled to Gas City Wednesday night to take on Mississinewa. The Lady Knights were playing without two of their starters in Abby Harness and Dakota Frazier because of injuries, so their depth would go deeper on the bench. In a defensive battle the Lady Knights come out on top 44-41.

Southwood started the game quaickly with a Mollie Harnish bucket only to watch Mississinewa score the next six points to take a 6-2 lead. Southwood would come back and tie the game twice before the Lady Indians pulled out to a 10-8 first quarter lead.

Mississinewa started the second quarter with a three pointer to give the Indians a five point lead. Harnish and Sarah White hit back to back buckets to pull within one before another Indian bucket. With 3:05 to play White canned a three of her own to tie the score and then a bucket from Ana Marie Farlow gave the Knights the lead going in to the locker room, 17-16.

Again, Mississinewa hit a three to start the quarter to give them the lead, but Harnish quickly erased that with a bucket. Up 21-20 Southwood went on an 8-0 run to open it up a little at 29-20. Southwood would build the lead to 31-22 before Mississinewa started a string of free throws to get back in the game with Southwood leading 31-27 after three. Southwood had five players score in the quarter.

As par for the game, Mississinewa started the scoring in the fourth quarter, hitting the first two buckets to tie it at 31. A Jessica Pegg bucket broke the ice for the Knights as they slowly built the lead to 38-32. Mississinewa had the lead cut to 40-37 with 48 seconds left and were fouling. Sarah White missed the front end of a one and one, but picked off the rebound and put it in to give Southwood the lead 42-37. Mississinewa hit and then fouled White again. This time she sank both free throws to ice the game at 44-39 before the Indians hit as time expired with Southwood up 44-41.

Sarah White lead Southwood with 16 points. Mollie Harnish had 12 points, Jessica Pegg 5 points, Ana Marie Farlow 4 points, Jenny Bentley 3 points and Katelyn Smith and Kaley Harness with 2 points each.
