The Southwood Lady Knights headed in to the sectional with a two game winning streak and winning 4 of their last 5. They were playing Lewis Cass to earn the right to play in the second round against Manchester.
The game started very slow with each team trying to feel out what the other was trying to do. Cass took the early lead, but Southwood responded to go up 5-4 on a Jessica Pegg three pointer and build the lead to 9-6 after one quarter. Abby Harness lead Southwood with 4 points in the quarter.
Cass would score the first 13 points of the second quarter to build a 19-9 lead. Southwood finally scored with 1:43 to go on a Pegg bucket. Ana Marie Farlow would hit two free throws to draw Southwood back to within 6 points at 19-13. Cass connected on a three at the buzzer to spread the lead back to 9 at 22-13.
Sarah White would nail a three pointer coming out of the half to pull the Lady Knights to within 6 at 22-16. Every time Southwood would get close Cass would come up with a bucket. This time Cass hit two straight to go up 10 at 26-16. The Lady Knights would run again. Harness converted a three point play and then White hit two straight buckets and Southwood was in control of the momentum, trailing just 26-23. Cass would answer with 5 straight points before Farlow scored before the buzzer to make it 31-25 after three. White lead the Lady Knights with 7 points in the quarter.
With the score 33-29 after buckets from Harness and White it seemed someone put a lid on the bucket for Southwood. Cass went on a 8-0 run and then out scored Southwood 9-8 down the stretch to upset Southwood 50-37.
Leading Southwood was Sarah White with 11 points. Mollie Harnish and Abby Harness each had 6. Jessica Pegg had 5, Ana Marie Farlow 4, Kaley Harness 3 and Amy Bowman 2.
Pictures of the sectional through the state are not for sale as the IHSAA charges $150.00 to be able to do so and wabashcountysports.com will not pay that to be able to do so.
