The Northfield boys basketball team lost in double overtime to Maconaquah Tuesday night 51-43 at Northfield.
The first quarter was a see saw battle with the lead going back and forth. Maconaquah took the lead first, going up 4-0 to start the game. Collin Dawes nailed a three followed by a bucket from Dustin Echard and the Norse were up 5-4. The game would be tied twice after that until Ryan Givens hit to put the Norse up 9-7. Maconaquah would hit a three at the buzzer to give the Braves a 10-9 lead after one.
Givens and Justin Parker opened the second quarter with buckets to put Northfield on top 13-10. Each of those tow players would score two more points each in the quarter and Northfield held on to a 16-15 half time lead.
The third quarter is one the Norse would like to forget, scoring just one point and giving up 9 to trail 24-17 going to the final stanza. Echard hit the lone free throw for the Norse.
The pace picked up in the fourth quarter. Parker started the scoring with a three, starting a 9-0 run that had buckets from Ryan Keaffaber and two from Joe Frieden to give Northfield a 26-24 lead. The two teams would battle back and forth with Maconaquah leading 33-31. Keaffaber connected with .37 seconds remaining to tie the score at 33. Maconaquah called time out to set up a play which back fired when the Norse stole the ball. Northfield’s shot attempt misse giving Maconaquah a shot with 6.3 seconds to go, which missed and forced over time.
Chad Glasscock started the overtime with a three for the Norse, but the Braves worked their way back to take the lead 37-36 with 2:09 to go. Parker hit qwith 1:15 to go to put Northfield up 38-37. Maconaquah hit one free throw with 17.8 remaining to tie the score. Northfield would have the last shot. Maconaquah fouled Frieden with 4.4 seconds remaining and both free throws were missed forcing a second over time, tied at 38.
Maconaquah scored the first 5 points of the second over time, taking control of the game. Givens would hit two free throws to make it 43-40 before the Norse were forced to start the foul game. Maconaquah would score the next 6 points from the free throw line before Glasscock hit a three to cut it to 49-43. Maconaquah hit two more free throws to finish the scoring, defeating the Norse 51-43
Leading Northfield was Ryan Givens with 12 points. Justin Parker had 8, Ryan Keaffaber 7, Chad Glasscock 6, Joe Frieden 4, Collin Dawes and Dustin Echard 3.
