It was a classic Southwood/Northfield boys basketball game Friday night at Treaty. The game was fast and physical with each team delivering blows and the other countering and it boiled down to a Mike Cook shot at the buzzer to deliver the Knights a 69-67 win.
Northfield, normally a slow paced offense picked up the pace to start the game and it seemed to catch the Knights a little off guard. The Norse quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead and built it to 10-5 before the Knights would fight back. The Knights cut the lea to 12-10 while trying to contain Ryan Keaffaber who had already scored 6 points. At 14-13 Mike Cook hit a three with 1:50 remaining to put the Knights up 16-14. Keaffaber quickly answered with a three of his own to put the Norse back up 17-16. Chad Glasscock and Keaffaber would hits buckets before the end of the quarter and the Norse lead 21-16 after one. Keaffaber had 11 points in the quarter for the Norse. Connor Hobbs connected on two three pointers for Southwood to lead the Knights with 6 points.
Levi Winget hit the first bucket of the second quarter to cut the lead to 21-18 before the Norse would go on a 6-0 run to up the lead to 27-18. Southwood kept pecking away and eventually cut the lead to 31-29. At 35-33 after a Mike Cook bucket, Keaffaber and Collin Dawes connected to keep Northfield up 39-33 at the half. Ryan Givens lead Northfield in the quarter with 6 points. Mike Cook lead southwood with 8.
This time Northfield scored first on a Givens bucket to make it 41-33. Collin Huston was fouled on a missed three point shot, but connected on all three free throws to make it 41-36. Givens would hit the next three buckets on fast breaks to give Northfield the momentum and a 47-36 lead. The lead would stay around 10 points with the quarter coming near the end. Cook nailed a jumper and then right before the quarter Codie Shafer hit for the Knights to make it a 6 point game 56-50 going to the final stanza. Givens lead Northfield with 8 points. Dalton Gentry had 6 for Southwood.
Connor Hobbs started the quarter with a three pointer to cut the lead to 56-53 and the typical metro clash was on. Givens hit and was answered by Winget. Givens hit again and was answered by a three from Huston. Cook connected with 4:52 to play and it was all knotted up at 60. Dustin Echard would hit two free throws to give Northfield the lead again, but Huston nailed his second three of the quarter and the Knights were up 63-62. Givens hit a two, followed by a free thrwo from Keaffaber and then a buicket and the Norse were up 67-63 with 1:35 to play. Cook would hit two free throws with 1:15 to play to make it a two point game at 67-65. Northfield missed an ill advised shot and Southwood hurried down the floor. Huston was fould on a missed three and made two of the free throws to tie the game at 67 with 24.1 to play. Northfield worked the ball and with 4.9 seconds to go the Knights stole the ball and called time out. Southwood inbounded the ball to Cook at three quarter court. Cook scampered down the left side and just inside the three point line let a jumper fly that hit all net at the buzzer for the thrilling 69-67 Southwood win.
Leading Southwood was Mike Cook with 23 points. Connor Hobbs and Levi Winget had 11. Collin Huston had 9, Dalton Gentry had 8, Grant Keaffaber had 3 and Codie Shafer had 2.
For Northfield Ryan Keaffaber had 23 points. Ryan Givens had 22, Chad Glasscock 8, Joe Freiden 6, Collin Dawes and Dustin Echard had 4.
