Northfield Wins Smedley Bowl

As 105.9 ”the bash’s” Andy McCord would say, ” it’s time for the Smedley Bowl”. Northfield coach Moe Smedley was taking on Madison Grant which is coached by Moe’s son Chris. The Argylls were coming in with a 13-6 record and Northfield was trying to snap a two game losing steak. Father won the battle as the Norse defeated Madison Grant in a thrilling 46-45 game that was not decided until 3.9 seconds to go.

It was obvious right from the start what kind of game it was going to be, physical. One team would punch and the other would counter punch. Madison Grant scored first, but Northfield had the answer. With the game tied at 6 the Argylls built it to 10-6. Northfield would come right back with a bucket from Ryan Keaffaber, followed by a three from Chad Glasscock and Northfield lead 11-10. Ryan Givens would hit his third bucket of the quarter to stretch the lead to 13-10 before Madison Grant hit the final bucket of the quarter to make it 13-12.

Justin Parker would hit a three to start the second quarter and the Norse were up 16-12. With Madison Grant creeping back, Glasscock hit two free throws to keep the lead at five, 19-14. After a Northfield time out Givens would connect again to stretch the lead to 21-14. The Argylls would hit three straight buckets to cut the lead to 21-20 before another Givens bucket snapped the run   right before the half for a 23-20 lead.

The second half is where Northfield has struggled the past few games, but they held their own in the third quarter. Collin Dawes started the third with a three pointer to go up 26-20. Back came the Argylls, cutting it to 26-24. Keaffaber would get hot at that point, hitting the next two buckets to put the Norse back up 30-24. After one more Keaffaber bucket made it 33-26, back came Madison Grant, scoring the next four points to cut the lead to 33-30 by the time the quarter was over.

Madison Grant hit the first two buckets of the fourth quarter to take a 34-33 lead. Givens hit a free throw and then Parker a bucket with 4:35 to go to put Northfield back up 36-34. After a couple more lead changes, Madison Grant took a 40-39 lead with 1:05 to play. The Argylls hit again with 50 seconds to go to make it 42-39. That’s when the strategies started to play. Parker hit to make it 42-41 and the Norse called time out. Northfield fouled coming out of the time out and Madison Grant converted the 1 and 1 to make it 44-41. A Joe Frieden bucket with 18 seconds left made it 44-43. Northfield fouled with 15.5 remaining. Madison Grant missed the front of the 1 and 1, buy got the rebound, forcing Northfield to foul with 13.6 to go and the Argylls now in the two shot bonus. The first shot missed and the second was good, making it 45-43. The Norse calmly moved the ball down the floor. Senior Justin Parker cut down the middle and elevated for a 5 footer that banked in and he was fouled. The score was tied at 45 and Madison Grant called time out to ice Parker and set up a last play. With 3.9 seconds remaining Parker calmly sank the free throw to put Northfield up 46-45. After the made free throw the Argylls called two more time outs trying to get a look at the Northfield defense. Madison Grant could not penatrate the Norse defense and had to settle for a 35 footer that missed, giving Northfield the 46-45 thriller.

Leading Northfield was Ryan Givens with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Justin Parker had 11, Ryan Keaffaber 9, Chad Glasscock 5, Joe Frieden 4 and Collin Dawes 3.
