”It was a classic county rival game” as put by Brad Wright who was substituting for Steve Heath as the Southwood stat keeper. The Southwood and Wabash 8th grade girls were battling for the right to advance in the RRC girls basketball tournament. The Lady Knights come out on top 26-21 in another game that was not decided until the last minute.
Southwood took early control leading 8-4 after one quarter. Haley Heath and Katie Stouffer had 4 points each for the Lady Knights. Claire Cromer and Sarah Ritter had 2 each for Wabash.
Wabash out scored Southwood 7-5 in the second quarter. Claire Cromer took over, scoring 7 points including a three pointer. Stouffer lead Southwood with 4.
In the third quarter Southwood out scored Wabash 7-5. Stouffer lead the Lady Knights with 4 points. Heath connected on a three. Kristyn Ford lead Wabash with 4 points. Southwood lead 20-16 with one quarter to go.
With 1 minute to go Southwood lead 22-20. Wabash fouled Heath with 53.9 remaining and Haley calmly sank both free throws. Wabash scored on a free throw from Cromer with 33.2 to go to make it 24-21, then fouled Heath again with 27.0 seconds. Heath, playing bigger than her height connected again to make it 26-21 which ended up being the final score.
Leading Southwood was Katie Stouffer with 12 points. Haley Heath added 11. MaKayla Ridgeway had 2 and Abby Houlihan had 1.
Leading Wabash was Claire Cromer with 13 points. Krystin Ford had 6 and Sarah Ritter had 2.
