Manchester’s baseball team picked up a 15-5 win over Anderson in the first game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, hosted by Manchester College, on Thursday.

The Spartans picked up five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-0 lead, but Anderson responded with a four-run third inning to cut it to a 5-4 MC lead. The Spartans scored three runs in the fourth and five more runs in the sixth to take a 13-5 lead, and added two runs in the seventh for the 15-5 final.

Curt Mallery improved to 7-1 on the year, throwing all nine innings with nine strikeouts and five runs allowed on seven hits. Mallery moves up to third place in MC records with 86 strikeouts in a season.

Bryce Murphy was 2-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, as he had a two run homerun in the second inning for MC. John Smolinski also homered in the second inning for Manchester, finishing 2-4 with two RBIs and a run. Ty Foster was 1-4, driving in two runs on a homerun in the seventh inning. David Tatham added two runs to the scoreboard, finishing 3-5 on the day, while Brad Murphy went 3-6 and Trey Forbes leading the way with a 3-4 performance, all doubles, with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Manchester improves to 27-13 overall and will face Franklin College in the semi-finals, as Franklin scored 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Rose-Hulman. The first game starts at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, with the consolation game starting at 12:30 p.m.
