Northfield opened their season at home Friday night with heavy hearts and for the third straight year defeated Bluffton, this time 12-6.
It was the tale of two halves. In the first quarter Austin Curless connected with Jared Kirtlan on a 27 yard scoring strike to give the Norse a 6-0 lead. With 11:53 remaining in the second quarter Bluffton got even, scoring to make it 6-6. Curless connected on a TD strike again, this time 52 yards to Tanner Chamberlain to put Northfield up 12-6 at the half.
Neither team scored in the second half as the Norse defense had their back to the wall numerous times, but rose to the occasion to preserve the win.
Leading the way on defense were Dustin Echard with 5 solo tackes, Jared Kirtlan, Joe Frieden, Hunter Wells, Andy Roser, and Joseph Ross also added multiple tackles. Jared Kirtlan also had a key interception to stop Bluffton inside the 10 yard line.
Austin Curless was 13 of 20 for 232 yards in the air, including hitting his first six passes. Curless lso rushed for 50 yards. Hunter Wells rushed for 44 yards.
Jared Kirtlan caught 4 passes for 76 yards and a touch down. Tanner Chamberlain caught 1 pass for 52 yards and a touch down. Morgan caught 1 pass for 41 yards.
Northfield had 14 first downs with 3 turn overs, 3 third down conversions and only 2 penalties for 10 yards.
The Norse defense held Bluffton to just 204 total yards, plus no positive total yards in the second half.
