Wabash Moves To 2-0

One didn’t know what to expect after the Wabash Apaches drummed Peru 37-0 last week, but for the first time since 1976 the Wabash  football team has started 2-0. The offensive and defensive lines dominated, letting the skilled positions do their thing and Wabash knocked off Alexandria 21-7 Friday night at home.

The Apaches kicked off first and looked as though they would give up a score on the first Alex possesion, but Cody Beeks come up with a big interception on the 25 to stop the drive and give Wabash the ball. The Apaches could not mount anything on their first possesion and were forced to punt. On the second Alex possesion Brian Abell recovered a fumble on the Alex 20yl. Four plays later Tyler Brewer scored on a two yard run and Wabash led 7-0. The bend but not break slogan was it for the Apaches as Alex marched down the field to Wabash’s 8 but could not score. The first quarter ended 7-0.

The two defenses battled early in the second quarter until Wabash mounted a drive, then scored with 19 seconds remaining on a tippped pass. Nate Price rainbowed the ball to the endzone which was tipped by Cody Beeks and caught by Tyler Brewer for a touchdown. The Apaches led 14-0 at the half.

There were only three possesions in the third quarter, two by Wabash and one by Alex with neither team being able to do anything with the ball, so the score remained 14-0 after 3.

Alex would break the ice on their first possesion of the fourth quarter, scoring on a 47 yard screen pass to make it 14-7 with 9:01 to go. After a stalled Wabash offense Beeks nailed a 60 yard punt that pushed Alex back deep in their own territory. Alex could not move the ball and elected to punt with a little over 4 1/2 minutes to play. The Apaches had the ball on their own 25 when Brewer broke loose and raced 75 yards for a touchdown, sticking a dagger in Alex. On Alex’s next possesion, Wabash’s Logan McDonald was badly hurt and taken to the hospital by ambulance, nearly 20 minutes after accident. The Apaches were then able to run the clock out and celebrate their 2-0 start.
