The Southwood Lady Knight volleyball team was coming off a 1-3 performance this past weekend at the Plymouth Invite against some very good teams, including 2A #1 Muncie Burris. The lesson that they learned on Saturday would either burst their bubble or ignite a fire. Man was it hot inside the Southwood gym Tuesday and I’m not talking about the temperature.
No sooner that the national anthem was over the Knights led 13-0 in game one. With Alyssa Stout serving the Knights started the game with a 13-0 run. Kaley Harness had three kills, Kristen Murphy two tips and a tip from Emily Murphy during the run. The Knights continued to build the lead to 19-2 behind Emily and Kristen Murphy. After Stout recorded her 6th ace of the game to make it 24-7, the Murphy sisters blocked a Tiger kill to end the game at 25-7.
Not wanting to have a mental lapse, the Lady Knights come out motivated in game two, quickly grabbing a 11-1 lead. Again Stout was serving during the 10-0 run while Harness and the Murphy’s controlled the nets. After a four point run made it 16-3 the Knights reeled off 8 straight points to make it 24-4. Kristen Murphy had three more kills along with Drew Rhamy and two from Lexi Brickner to seal the 25-5 win.
Game three did not have the big run to pull away from the Tigers. Instead it was a game of small runs that gradually built the lead to 16-4 and eventually 21-8. The Tigers had a late surge to out score Southwood 5-4 down the stretch, but the Knights still won easily 25-13.
