Northfield was playing their last home game of the season which meant it was senior night, plus they were riding an 18 game winning streak. The Lady Norse were hosting Maconaquah before they play in the Marion Invitational on Saturday and then the sectional next week. Maconaquah was hoping to catch the Norse looking past them.
With some heavy hitting and timely blocking by Maconaquah the Norse were upset by the Braves 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 6-15.
Northfield dominated game one. After Maconaquah took a 1-0 lead the Norse went on a 4-0 run to lead 4-1. Kylie Echard had two kills early and then Haley Walchle took over with three kills and the Norse stretched the lead to 15-7. After the Braves cut the lead to 15-12 Echard and Walchle went to work again. After an Echard kill made it 20-15 Elaina Terrell got in on the action with two kills and then Bethany Azbell served an ace and the Norse cruised to a game one win 25-17.
Game two would go to the wire. There were several lead changes as Maconaquah controlled the game early. This time it was the Braves who got the early start, going up 5-1 before an Echard kill stopped the run. Northfield would claw their way back and eventually tie the score at 13 on a Kendal Reed kill. Maconaquah would regaon the lead, but Walchle led the Norse back and then took the lead 18-17 on a Terrell ace. The lead would change two more times and Northfield went up 23-21 on kills from Walchle and Echard. Maconaquah went on a 4-0 run to end the game 25-23 and tie the match 1-1.
Game three would be no different than game two except for the outcome. Maconaquah started with a 4-0 run and then the Norse scored 6 of the next 7 points to go up 6-5. The Norse run was aided by two Emily Shafer aces and an ace from Amber Parker. Tied at 7, Maconaquah would go on a 7-1 run to take a 14-8 lead. Walchle, Reed, Tori Snyder and Terrell all had kills and the Norse hit their way back in to the game and tied the score at 16. Maconaquah would take the lead again and build the lead to 20-17. Two kills from Walchle and one from Bayli Birk and the Norse took the lead at 22-21. Walchle had two more kills and then an Echard kill ended game three 25-23.
Game four would start with six ties before three consecutive kills by Birk, Snyder and Walchle made it 10-7. The Norse would keep a three point lead until 14-11 when Maconaquah went on a 4-0 run to take the lead back at 15-14. After five more ties Maconaquah took the lead for good at 22-21 and won game four 25-22.
In the deciding game five Maconaquah took an early 3-0 lead. Echard stopped that run with a kill and the Norse tied the score at 3. At that point Maconaquah took control, going on a 7-0 run to make it 10-3. Terrell had a kill and Shafer an ace to make it 10-5 and it looked as though the Norse had the momentum. Maconaquah would out score Northfield 5-1 down the stretch and win game five 15-6 and the match 3-2.
