Manchester was coming off their first win of the year, trying to gain some momentum heading for the sectional and Northfield was playing for a winning record for the regular season. To top it off it was a county rival game.
Both teams were a little shaky at first. Manchester had first possession and went three and out. Northfield took over on the 31, starting a drive and seven plays later Austin Curless was picked off by Jon Woodward. The Squires had the ball on the Norse 42 and quickly moved the ball down the field and were threatening to score. Northfield’s Joe Frieden picked off Logan Brunn in the endzone to stall the Squire drive. Starting on the 20 the Norse mounted a drive. On 2nd and 10 from the 30, Curless scrambled and hit Tanner Chamberlain on the Squire 48. The Norse continued to drive and when the quarter ended they were on the Squire 21 with no score on the board.
On 4th and 4 from the Manchester 15 the Norse decided to go. Curless connected with Frieden to the Squire 4. Three plays later Andy Roser scored the first points of the game on a 2yd run, giving Northfield a 6-0 lead with 10:22 remaining. On the insuing kickoff the Norse attempted an onside kick that was recovered by Manchester, but an inadvertent whistle had blown the play dead before the recovery and the Norse had to kick again. Again they kicked the onside kick and this time recovered it. Northfield would pound the ball up the gut, with Roser and Hunter Wells carrying the load. On a 5 minute drive, Wells took it in from a foot out and Northfield led 13-0 with 5:14 to go. Manchester would be forced to punt on their next possession. Joe Frieden fielded the kick, runninig it back 72yds to the Squire 6. Two plays later Frieden took it in from 4yds out and Northfield led 20-0 with 2:33 remaining. On the next Manchester possession, Curless picked off Brunn, returning it to the Squire 7, looking to score one more time before the half. The Norse fumbled on the first play and Manchester’s Kyle Schaeffer recovered. The first half ended with Northfield leading 20-0.
Northfield took first possession of the second half and the Squire defense dominated, forcing Northfield to punt. Preston Penrod carried the ball 12yds on the first play and you had a feeling he was on the verge of breaking one. Two plays later that’s just what happened. Brunn dumped a screen pass to Penrod who went right and then shifted left and raced 55yds for the touchdown, making it 20-7 with 7:31 to go. Northfield would eat up the remaining time in quarter, feeding Roser and Frieden the ball and had the ball 3rd and goal on the Squire 1 when the quarter ended.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Roser took it in and Northfield led 26-7. Manchester could not muster any offense, giving the ball back to Northfield. The Norse again would mount a drive and had the ball 4th and 1 on the Squire 2. Jim Sainsbury would sack Curless and Manchester would hold. Both defenses controlled the rest of the game and the 26-7 score held as the final.
