It was round one of the 2A sectional at Manchester. The Squires were hosting county rival Wabash in their first ever sectional game at Manchester’s new field. The Squires had won the match up earlier in the year 51-34 and were out to show it was no fluke. Wabash was seeking revenge.
The Squires wasted no time setting the tone of the game, taking the opening kickoff and marching down the field. Logan Brunn took a keeper in from 19 yards out with 8:53 to play and the Squires led 7-0. The Apaches Isaiah Smith took the kickoff out to the 42, but the offense stalled and Wabash was forced to punt. On Manchester’s second possession it was a dose of Preston Penrod. After a 14yd run, Penrod broke loose for 56yds for the second Squire score with 6:36 remaining and Manchester led 13-0. With the first quarter closing, the Apaches were driving and had the ball on the Squire 16. Evan Olinger picked off a Roger Davis pass in the endzone to stop the Apache drive.
Olinger had attempted to bring his first quarter pick out of the endzone and the Squires started their next possession on their own 2. On the first play of the second quarter, Penrod broke loose again, this time for 82yds and a touchdown. Manchester led 20-0 with 11:47 to go. Again Smith would give the Apaches good field position, but the offense could not get it going and were forced to punt once more. 1 minute and 28 seconds after Penrod’s 82yd run he would break loose again, scoring his third touchdown from 39yds out, making it 26-0 at 10:19. Wabash would mount a drive on their next possession, moving the ball in to Squire territory before they were forced to punt. The Apaches faked the punt, pitching it to Tyler Brewer, who took it to the 19. two plays later a tipped Davis pass was caught by Justin Holley in the endzone and Wabash had broken the ice, making it 26-6 with 6:58 to go. On Manchester’s next possession, Penrod broke loose again, but fumbled with the Apaches recovering. The Manchester defense held and the offense had one more shot before the half. Between Gunner Ream and Penrod the Squires moved the ball to the Apache 7 when Brunn took it in, making it 32-6 at the half.
Preston Penrod had 279yds rushing in the first half.
The two defenses would dominate in the third quarter, with there being just one score. After trading fumbles and interceptions, Manchester scored on a Jacob Casper run from 38yds out to make the third quarter score 39-6.
Casper would score his second TD of the night with 3:36 to go, putting the Squires up 46-6. Wabash would then ride Ryan Davenport to the endzone, with Davenport scoring on a 20yd run and then converting the 2pt conversion, 46-14. The class act of the night came with around a minute to go when Wabash coach Floyd McWirt called timeout and had his 12 seniors come out together holding hands.
Manchester had 580yds rushing on the night. Penrod led the attack with 279yds. Logan Brunn and Jacob Casper had 104yds each
For Wabash, Roger Davis was 13 of 37 for 108yds. Tyler Brewer had 90yds rushing. Brian abell had 5 receptions for 92yds.
