The Southwood Lady Knight volleyball team was fresh off winning their fifth straight sectional title just three days ago and were seeking their fourth straight regional title at Southwood Tuesday night.
With tons of youth and varsity inexperience and just two seniors on this years team, the Lady Knights were under huge pressure to keep the tradition going. After a three game sweep of Depli, the doubt was gone. Southwood swept Delphi 25-18, 25-19, 25-17 to earn a right in Saturdays semi-state at Bremen.
Game one got started a little shaky with Delphi taking an early 4-2 lead. The Lady Knights calmed their nerves and fought back to tie the score at 4 with kills from Lexi Brickner and Kaley Harness. Down 6-5 the Knight offense exploded, going on an 8-0 run to take a 13-6 lead. Drew Rhamy and Kristen Murphy scored 7 of the 8 points on kills and blocks with the other point coming from a Lexi Brickner ace. The Knights would hold their 7 point lead and led 20-13 before Emily Murphy and Amy Bowman got in on the act to make it 23-13. Maybe relaxing to much the Knights let Delphi score the next 5 points before Kristen Murphy ended it with a kill, 25-18.
In game two with the score tied at 5 again the Knight offense went to work once more. Two Lexi Brickner aces and a couple Delphi errors and the Knights led 11-5. Southwood led 15-8 after a double block by the Murphy sisters before Delphi scored 4 straight to cut the lead to 15-12. The lead was cut to 18-16 until kills from Kristen Murphy and Drew Rhamy made it 21-16. With Alyssa Stout serving the Knights went on to win game two 25-19.
In game three it wasn’t just the Southwood offense dominating. The Lady Knight defense allowed Delphi to score more than two points in a row just once and held them to just two, two point runs. Up 6-4 Kaley Harness and Amy Bowman had kills to open the lead to 10-4. The Knights continued to open the lead one point at a time until it was 19-14. Again, Harness got them going with a kill that was followed by a Kristen Murphy block and the game was in control 23-14. After Delphi’s only three point run af the game, Harness stopped it with a kill and Alyssa Stout finished the night with an ace, 25-17.
