Ever hear the old saying ”defense wins”. That couldn’t have been more true for the Wabash Lady Apaches Wednesday. The Wabash offense struggled, but the defense tightened the screws in a 48-29 win over Peru Wednesday.
It looked like the Wabash offense was going to click right away Wednesday. Right off the opening tip, Kelsey Cromer drained a three pointer and then hit a two just seconds later to give Wabash a quick 5-0 lead. Kyleigh Hampton connected on a two and with 3:47 left Claire Cromer hit two free throws and the Apaches led 9-0. During the next 1:40, Peru would go on an 8-0 run to make it 9-8 with 2:06 to play. Out of the Wabash time out, Hampton would hit again and Charlie Pardo nailed a three to give the Apaches a 14-8 lead after one.
Wabash would start the second quarter, going on a 10-0 run. Hampton started the quarter with a three pointer, followed by a bucket from Pardo, a three point play from Kelsey Cromer and a bucket from Kalie Obenour. Claire Cromer and Marin Hill would add buckets and the Apache defense held Peru to just 5 points in the quarter and led 28-13 at the half.
The Wabash offense went stagnant in the third quarter, scoring just 7 points, but the defense held the Lady Tigers scoreless as Wabash built the lead to 35-13 after three. Kelsey Cromer had 5 points in the quarter, hitting her second three of the game and Marin Hill added 2 points.
The fourth quarter heated up a little, with Peru out scoring Wabash 16-13, but never cut the lead under 19 points. Kelsey Cromer hit her third three of the game to score 9 points in the quarter for a game high 22 points.
Leading Wabash was Kelsey Cromer with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assist, 3 steals and 1 block. Kyleigh Hampton had 7 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assist and 1 steal. Charlie Pardo had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Claire Cromer had 6 points, 1 rebound, 3 assist and 2 steals. Marin Hill had 5 points and 7 rebounds. Kalie Obenour had 2 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal. Katelyn Vogel had 3 rebounds and 1 assist.
