The Northfield girls basketball team held their own for a half and then stumbled for a half in a 66-50 loss to Taylor Tuesday.
The Norse fell behind by two points in each of the first two quarters on last second shots. In the first quarter Taylor hit a shot at the buzzer to go up 10-8 and then nailed a three pointer with 1 second to go in the second quarter to take a 27-25 halftime lead.
Sidney Reed hit two buckets and one from Caitlin Eltzroth put the Norse up 6-4 early in the game. After falling behind 8-6, Kylie Echard hit to tie the score at 8 before Taylor hit at the buzzer.
Taylor started the second quarter extending the lead to 13-8 before buckets from Alyssa Richter, Reed and Sydney Eltzroth cut the lead to 18-16. Katie Stephan hit two straight buckets to tie the score at 20, then a free throw from Eltzroth and another Stephan bucket put the Norse up 23-20. The Norse would hold the lead until 1 second to go when Taylor sank a three and took the halftime lead 27-25.
The Norse come out of the locker room and tied the score at 27 on a Sidney Reed bucket. That’s when the wheels fell off. Taylor went on a 14-0 run and led 41-27 with 3:08 to go. The Norse cut the lead under 10 points with buckets from Stephan and Reed before Taylor built it back to 15. Unwilling to fold Northfield cut it to 47-36 after three quarters.
The Norse stayed within 11 to 12 points most of the fourth quarter, before having to start fouling to try and get back in the game. Taylor converted their free throws and extended the lead to the 66-50 final.
Leading the Lady Norse was Sidney Reed with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assist and 3 steals. Sydney Eltzroth had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assist and 1 block. Katie Stephan had 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assist and 2 steals. Caitlin Eltzroth had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Alyssa Richter had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assist and 4 steals. Kylie Echard had 2 points, 1 rebound and 1 block. Michelle Hendricks had 2 rebounds and 1 assist.
