It was the battle of Metro and no one in the gym expected anything less than a battle. Each team won two quarters, with Southwood coming out the winner in a game that wasn’t decided until the final buzzer, 40-36.
Northfield would win the low scoring first quarter 5-2. With the adrenaline flowing by both teams playing their county rival, neither could find the bucket.
In the second quarter the Lady Knight offense come to life, while holding Northfield to single digits, out scoring the Norse 16-7 and led 18-12 at the half.
The third quarter was just the opposite of the second. The Norse offense would click and hold the Knights to single digits. Northfield out scored Southwood 15-8 in the third to lead 27-26, setting up a nail biter fourth quarter.
The two teams played the first 7 minutes of the final quarter with the Knights out scoring the Norse by 2 and led by 1 with 59 seconds to go when Northfield’s Alyssa Richter was fouled. Richter calmly sank both free throws to put Northfield back up by 1, 35-34. With 34 seconds to play, Southwood’s Sarah White would connect, get fouled and convert the three point play to give Southwood a 37-35 lead. In the in suing seconds Northfield missed the front of a one and one, Southwood threw the ball away and then Northfield stepped out of bounds. After all the mishaps the Knights Jenny Bentley was fouled with 26.9 to go, hitting one free throw to make it 38-35. Northfield’s Sydney Eltzroth hit with 19.9 left,making it 38-36. Southwood’s Sarah White was fouled with 17 seconds left and calmly sank both free throws for the final margin of 40-36.
Leading Southwood was Sarah White with 20 points. Jessica Pegg, Katie Stouffer and Amy Bowman had 4 points each. Ana Marie Farlow had 3 points, Mollie Harnish and Kaley Harness had 2 poinst each. Jenny Bentley had 1 point.
Leading Northfield was Sidney Reed with 14 points. Alyssa Richter had 8 points. Katie Stephan, Sydney Eltzroth and Caitlin Eltzroth had 4 points each. Michelle Hendricks had 2 points.
Southwood raised their record to 2-5. Northfield is 2-6.
Southwood travels to Bluffton Tuesday. Northfield host Wabash next Saturday.
