The Manchester Lady Squire basketball team had a great first half and then held on Friday night for a 61-56 win at Whitko. The Lady Squires put four players in double figures and used stellar defense for the win.
With strong offense and very good defense the Lady Squires built their lead in the first half. Manchester won the first quarter 13-10 and the second 16-7 to lead 29-17 at the half. The defense was the key, as Manchester gave up just 9 points in the last 14 minutes of the half. Meika Kennedy and Hannah Little led the Squires in the first quarter with 4 points each. Little led five players scoring in the second quarter with 5 points.
The Squires would also out score Whitko in the third quarter, 18-16 and led 47-33 after three. Kennedy, Hannah Schmidt and Kayla Flack all had three pointers in the quarter. Flack led the way with 6 points.
Whitko was at home and wasn’t willing to fold. The Wildcat offense caught fire and made a charge at the Squires, out scoring Manchester 23-14 in the final quarter, but the Squires cushion was enough to hold on for the win. The Squires held on by hitting 8 free throws down the stretch. Hannah Little led the fourth quarter with 7 points.
Leading Manchester was Hannah Little with 18 points, 2 assist, 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Meika Kennedy had 14 points, 3 assist, 1 block, 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Kayla Flack had 12 points, 2 assist, 10 rebounds and 2 steals. Hannah Schmidt had 11 points, 1 assist, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Kaylee watson had 6 points, 1 block and 1 rebound. Malyssa Bedke had 3 rebounds. Bekah Brunn had 1 rebound. Autumn Brewer had 1 rebound and 1 steal.
The JV lost to Whitko 29-19 to drop to 4-3 on the year.
Tabby DeWitt led with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Madison Isbell had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 3 steals.
Prior to the JV and varsity games the Manchester ”C” team defeated Whitko 17-15. Kiana Gillum, Tabby DeWitt and Lindsey Dierks had 4 points each. Shelby Johnson had 3 points. Mariah Mobley and Kaitlyn Parrett added 1 point each.
