For the second game in a row the Wabash Lady Apache basketball team was playing a ranked opponent. On Saturday Wabash defeated #17 Rochester and had the task of trying to take down #7 Oak Hill Tuesday.
The Lady Apaches used a balance scoring attack and tenacious defense to complete their second straight upset in a 52-33 win over Oak Hill.
Oak Hill took the lead 2-0 on two free throws before Claire Cromer tied it with a bucket. The Eagles would go up again 4-2, when wabash responded with a 9-0 run to end the quarter. Kyleigh Hampton would hit a three, followed by a Claire Cromer bucket and two free throws from sister Kelsey to make it 9-4 and then Claire finished the run and quarter with her third bucket for an 11-4 first quarter lead.
The two teams would trade blows early in the second quarter and Wabash led 16-11 with 4:14 to go in the second. Oak Hill cut it to 18-16 when Katelin Vogel hit with 1:44 left, then converted the old fashion three to give the Apaches a 21-16 lead. Oak Hill hit the final bucket of the half and Wabash led 21-18.
Oak Hill started the third quarter flexing their muscle, quickly tying the game at 21 and then taking a 23-21 lead. Claire Cromer stopped that run and the two team would trade the lead six more times until Kelsey Cromer nailed a three to put Wabash up 31-29. The Apaches would finish the quarter with a 5-0 run with a bucket from Hampton and a three point play from Kelsey Cromer to lead 36-29 with a quarter to go.
The tenacious Apache defense took control of the game in the fourth, allowing the Eagles just 4 points while scoring 16. Kyleigh Hampton led Wabash in the fourth with two three pointers and Kelsey Cromer hit a bucket. with Oak Hill trying to play catch up, Wabash converted on 8 free throws down the stretch for the 52-33 win.
Leading Wabash was Kelsey Cromer with 19 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal and 2 blocks. Claire Cromer had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assist and 2 steals. Kyleigh Hampton had 13 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 6 blocks. Katelin Vogel had 3 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block. Marin Hill had 2 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block. Sarah Puckett had 1 rebound. Hannah Mullett had 1 rebound.
