The Southwood Lady Knight basketball team had felt they had under achieved early in the season and had a chance to show everyone what type of basketball team they really had. The #14 Manchester Lady Squires were paying the Knights a visit in hopes of extending their winning streak to four games before the Christmas break and the county tourney.
The Squires would jump out quick with a bucket from Autumn Brewer and a three from Kayla Flack to take a 5-0 lead before Southwood freshman Jaycie Wright, making her first start would hit. Wright was followed by fellow freshman Katie Stouffer with a bucket and the Knights were within one at 5-4. Kaylee Watson would hit for the Squires to go up three, when Kaley Harness drained a three, making it 7-7 and the quarter ended just as the game started, all even.
Sarah White would start the second quarter hitting to free throws, giving the Knights their first lead of the night at 9-7. Manchester quickly erased that with a Hannah Little bucket and the war was on. Manchester hit two of the next three buckets and led 13-11 when White nailed a three pointer with 3:04 to go, giving Southwood a 14-13 lead and for the next three minutes neither team could find the bucket and that’s the way the half ended.
Coming out of the half, Ana Marie Farlow and Amy Bowman hit and the Knights extended their lead to 18-13. Manchester would start to claw their way back and eventually tied the score at 20 on a Lindsey Budnik bucket. Mollie Harnish would hit her second bucket of the game, giving the Knights the lead back before buckets from Brewer and Hannah Schmidt put the Squires up 24-22. Sarah White would hit the last bucket of the quarter and again we were all even at 24 after three quarters.
Jessica Pegg started the third quarter hitting a three to put the Knights up 27-24, then Schmidt converted two free throws to draw the Squires to 27-26. No one would score the next two minutes until Wright and Budnik hit to make it 29-28. Manchester would take a short lead on a Brewer bucket before two Harnish free throws put the Knights back up 31-30. Southwood would stretch the lead to 34-30 on free throws from White and Wright. With 1:16 to go, Kayla Flack fouled out and Farlow hit two more free throws upping the lead to 36-30. With time running out the Squires scored three more points, but it wasn’t enough and Southwood had completed the upset 38-33.
Leading Southwood was Sarah White with 8 points. Jaycee Wright had 7, Ana Marie farlow and Mollie Harnish 6, Kaley Harness, Katie Stouffer and Jessica Pegg 3 and Amy Bowman 2.
For Manchester Autumn Brewer had 11 points. Kayla Flack, Hannah Little, Kaylee Watson, Lindsey Budnik and Hannah Schmidt 4. Bekah Brunn had 2.
