The Northfield boys junior varsity basketball team started off very slow and them came back to force overtime and hold off Southwestern 57-55 in the Pioneer Shootout Wednesday.
The junior varsity shootout format is different that the varsity. The varsity is playing a round robin and guaranteed 3 games. The JV is a single elimination.
The Norse got off to a very slow start and trailed 15-4 after the first quarter and 26-16 at the half.
After a halftime pep talk from coach Schenkel the Norse out scored Southwestern 20-4 in the third quarter and led 36-30 with a quarter to go in regulation. Southwestern out scored Northfield 18-12 in the fourth and the game was headed for overtime tied at 48.
The two teams battled in the overtime and with 1:00 to play it was tied at 55. Carter Frieden was fouled with 5.9 seconds remaining and calmly sank both free throws to put the Norse up 57-55 and then Jon Richardson stole the ball with 1.2 left to seal the game.
Jon Richardson led with 21 points and 6 steals. Adam Roser had 18 points and 6 rebounds.

The Norse play at 10:00 Friday. If they win they will play in the JV championship at 2:30
