After an exciting down to the last second win on Wednesday over Southwestern in the first game of the Pioneer Shootout, the Northfield boys basketball team didn’t let it get that close Friday. The Norse took care of Oregon Davis in the first game 64-35 and then came back in the nightcap to top Covenant Christian 61-42.
In game one against Oregon Davis Friday the Norse started a little rusty, going up 8-2 on buckets from Ryan Givens and Dustin Echard before letting the Bobcats back in the game and led just 12-8 after one.
The offense caught a little fire to start the second, going on an 8-0 run to start. Givens and Ryan Keaffaber did the damage and the Norse led 20-8. The Norse held a 12 point lead with 33.1 to go after two Echard free throws, followed by a Houston Miller free throw and then ended the half on a laser pass from Keaffaber to Givens for a layup and the Norse led 29-14.
The Norse would out score the Bobcats 35-21 in the second half as they shuffled players in and out, trying to conserve some energy for the second game. Northfield put 7 of the 8 players in the scoring column.
Ryan Givens would lead the Norse with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Collin Dawes had 13 points and 4 assist. Ryan Keaffaber had 11 points, 4 assist and 4 rebounds. Dustin Echard had 10 points and 5 rebounds. Houston Miller had 8 points. Chad Glasscock and Cody Gibson added 4 points each.
In game two the Norse took off to a 4-0 lead with buckets from Ryan Keaffaber and Chad Glasscock before Covenant made it 4-3. Keaffaber and Dustin Echard hit to make it 9-5 and then Keaffaber would score the last 4 of his first quarter 9 points to give the Norse a 15-7 first quarter lead.
Collin Dawes started the second quarter converting a three point play, followed by two Ryan Givens free throws to make it 20-7. The Norse would spread the wealth in the quarter with four players scoring, led by Dawes with 5 points and led 30-21 at the half.
The two Ryan’s, Keaffaber and Givens would dominate the scoring in the third quarter, while Dustin Echard led the defensive charge, holding the Knights to just 3 points while scoring 13. Keaffaber had 8 points in the quarter, Givens added 4.
After leading the defensive side in the third quarter, Echard took control of the offense in the fourth. Six players scored in the quarter, led by Echard with 6. The Norse went on to win 61-42 to go 3-0 in the tourney and win their bracket of the round robin tournament.
The Norse put all eight players on the roster in the scoring column against Covenant.
Leading the Norse was Ryan Keaffaber with 24 points, 3 steals and 3 assist. Ryan Givens had 8 points and 9 rebounds. Dustin Echard had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Collin Dawes had 7 points and 6 assist. Chad Glasscock had 5 points, Cody Gibson 4 points, Ethan Stouffer 3 points and Houston Miller 2 points.
Ryan Keaffaber and Dustin Echard were named to the All Tourney Team.
