The Northfield Lady Norse used a fast start and a strong first half to pick up their fourth win of the season Tuesday, a 53-48 win over Bluffton.
The Norse offense caught fire right from the opening tip, racing out to an 11-0 lead and out scoring Bluffton 17-9 in the first quarter. The Norse came out with a half court trap, with 6 footer Kylie Echard on the top applying heavy pressure, creating steals and causing turnovers. Five players scored in the quarter, with Katie Stephan leading the way with 6 points. Sydney Eltzroth added 5.
The Norse would keep the defensive heat turned up in the second quarter, not giving the Lady Tigers a bucket until the 4:43 mark, again holding Bluffton to just 9 points as Eltzroth took over on the offense, scoring 8 of Northfield’s 13 points, building the lead to as high as 16 points before leading 30-18 at the half.
Bluffton regrouped at the half and showed up in the third quarter with a little more offense. In the first two minutes of the quarter, Bluffton had cut the lead to 10 points at 34-24 and Sidney Reed picked up her third foul. The Lady Norse would try to hold off the Tigers, but they kept coming and had the lead down to 36-32 with 1:50 to play. Eltzroth would then drain her second three pointer of the game and then hit a two right before the quarter end to give Northfield a 41-34 lead after three.
After Bluffton hit the first bucket of the final quarter, Stephan and Arie Kennedy hit to push the lead back to 46-36 and then held on behind six made free throws and Stephan’s 6 fourth quarter points to seal the 53-48 win.
