Southwood 7th Grade Girls Knock Off Undefeated Eastbrook

Story By Steve Heath

The Southwood 7th Grade Lady Knights traveled to 9-0 Eastbrook on
Wednesday night for their first big challenge of the season. The
Panthers scored the first basket of the game to take their only lead of
the game at 2-0. The Lady Knights then proceeded to smother Eastbrook
with their full court press, outscoring Eastbrook 7-1 the rest of
quarter to lead 7-3 after the first quarter.

The Knights and Panthers traded baskets in the 2nd quarter, each scoring
9 points to give the Lady Knights a 16-12 half time lead. The Knights
had dominated the first half action, but had struggled hitting on
lay-ups and rebound put backs, so the lead was just an uncomfortable 4
points.

The first three minutes of the 3rd quarter were scoreless, but then
Eastbrook began to fade under the non-stop defensive pressure from the
Lady Knights. The Knights turned several steals into lay-ups or free
throw attempts to close the 3rd quarter with a 10-0 run. The Knights
held Eastbrook scoreless for the quarter and led 26-12 heading to the
final quarter.

The Lady Knights ran their slowdown offense for much of the 4th quarter
and burned Eastbrook for two backdoor lay-ups, both on great passes from
Makenna Dawes (one each to Kassidy Atwood and Taylor Heath). The
Knights lead by as much as 32-15 before the final score settled at
32-21.

The 7th Grade Lady Knights run their record to 3-0 and play Thursday,
January 12 at home vs. Lakeview Middle School (Warsaw).

Tonight’s stats:
Brooke Elliott 15 points, 9 rebounds, 9 steals
Taylor Heath 9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 8 steals
Ashley Parson 6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals
Kassidy Atwood 2 points, 12 rebounds, 1 block
Makenna Dawes 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal
Mia Hunley 1 rebound

The 8th grade fell at Eastbrook. Ellie LaBonte had 6 points and Danielle Pegg added 2 points.
