Lady Spartans Pull Off Upset

Manchester 39 – #13 Franklin 36


Manchester’s women’s basketball team pulled off a 39-36 upset over undefeated, 13th ranked and league-leading Franklin College in action from Franklin’s Spurlock Center on Saturday. 20 of Manchester’s 39 points and 18 of Franklin’s 36 points came from the free throw lines, as both teams struggled from the floor shooting. MC was just 9-48 from the field while Franklin ended the game 9-39, and the Spartan defense forcing 22 turnovers by Franklin.

Manchester took a 19-16 lead into halftime and went up by as many as nine points, 29-20 with 13:10 remaining. Franklin tied the game at 30-30 at the 6:25 mark, and a pair of Jocelyn Hamilton free throws gave MC a 34-33 lead with 4:06 left. Franklin tied the game at 34-34 with a one and one free throw, but a Laine Mello lay up followed by a blocked shot two possessions later and two more free throws from Hamilton helped seal the 39-36 win.

Laine Mello led MC with 13 points and nine rebounds. She added two steals and a blocked shot while hitting 5-6 free throws. Kailey Honn added seven points and seven rebounds with three blocked shots, a steal and an assist. Jocelyn Hamilton scored six points, hitting 4-4 free throws down the stretch, and grabbed four rebounds and had two steals.

The Spartans improve to 11-4 on the year, 7-1 in the conference and move into a first place tie with Franklin and Hanover. MC will travel to Bluffton on Wednesday.

Men’s Basketball

Franklin 63 – Manchester 47 (box attached as fcm12g15.htm)


Manchester’s men’s basketball team fell to Franklin 63-47 in conference action from Franklin on Saturday. Manchester found themselves down down 17-2 the first five minutes into the contest, but chipped the Franklin lead to just seven, 32-25 with two minutes left in the first half before settling for a Grizzlie 36-26 halftime lead.

Franklin went up 50-33 at the 10:48 mark in the second half before Manchester’s Jordan Moss, Grant Newlin and Greg Flores put together a 9-0 run to make it a 50-41 Franklin lead with 7:09 remaining. Franklin bounced back to make it a 61-43 game with 2:49 remaining and settled for the 63-47 win.

Jordan Moss led the Spartans with 13 points, and had four rebounds, two steals and an assist. Greg Flores and Grant Newlin added nine points each, with Flores hitting 3-6 from the field and 1-2 free throws. Newlin was 4-6 from the floor. Jason Spindler added five points and seven rebounds with three blocked shots and a steal.

Manchester falls to 5-10 on the year, 3-5 in the HCAC. They will return to conference action at home on Wednesday as they host Bluffton and Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.
