Lady Knights Use Balance To Top Braves

The Southwood Lady Knight basketball team went outside conference play Tuesday night to host the  Maconaquah Lady Braves, looking for their 4th win of the season.  With balanced scoring the Knights defeated Maconaquah 52-36.

The Knights jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead to start the game, which could have been larger, but 8 turnovers halted some momentum. Also, up 8-2 spark plug Sarah White picked up her second foul and was forced to the bench. With White on the bench, Maconaquah inched their way back to within one point at 12-11 before Mollie Harnish hit with six seconds to go to give the Knights a 14-11 first quarter lead.

Southwood would hit the first two buckets of the second quarter and then go up 20-13 on a Harnish bucket. Ana Marie Farlow would hit the last two Knight buckets of the quarter to give Southwood a 27-19 halftime lead.

The third quarter had been a problem all year for the Knights, maintaining the momentum from the first half. Although the scoring by both teams was down in the quarter, the Knights held their own and the lead, out scoring Maconaquah 8-7, leading 35-26 with a quarter to go.

The fourth quarter would end up being the Knights largest scoring out put of the night, putting up 17 points while holding the Braves to 10. Julia Osborne hit some key free throws down the stretch and the Knights picked up their 4th win of the season, 52-36.

Leading Southwood was Mollie Harnish with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Ana Marie Farlow had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 1 assist. Emily Murphy had 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jaycie Wright had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assist. Sarah White had 5 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assist and 1 steal. Julia Osborne had 3 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal. Amy Bowman had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Jessica Pegg had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assist and 1 block.

The junior varsity come from behind to defeat the Braves 36-28. Down 24-20 with a quarter to go the Lady Knights out scored Maconaquah 16-4 in the final stanza.

Leading the JV was Haley Heath with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Emily Lehner had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assist, 4 steals and 1 block. Abby Houlihan had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Meranda Friend had 4 points and 2 steals. Aleesha Phillips had 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Grace Whitham had 3 points and 2 rebounds.
