The Southwood girls basketball team gave Eastern a scare Thursday night. The Comets were coming in with a 13-4 record and fresh off a convincing 56-39 win over #12 Oak Hill Tuesday.
One bad quarter with several small Eastern runs built the Comets a 22-11 lead after one, forcing the Knights to play catch up the rest of the game. The Knights would come back, closing to within a point, but couldn’t get over the hump, falling 71-68.
Eastern would start the game with a 7-0 run before Jaycie Wright hit her only bucket of the game to stop the bleeding. After A Sarah White bucket made it 7-4 the Comets would go on their next run, this time 8-0 to increase the lead to 15-4. Ana Marie Farlow and White would hit back to back buckets and Eastern would answer with their last run of the quarter, a 7-3 run to open a 22-11 lead after one.
The two teams would trade buckets early in the second quarter before Eastern would score 6 straight to take a 31-16 lead. back come the Knights. Farlow, Jessica Pegg and White hit to make it 31-21. Down 35-23, Sarah White would hit two straight to cut the lead to 35-27 before Eastern hit a free throw to end the quarter and led the Knights 36-27 at the half.
Southwood would come out of the locker room inspired. After an Eastern bucket to start the quarter the Lady Knights went to work. Four Sarah White free throws, plus a bucket made it 38-33. Two Eastern free throws, then a White bucket followed by one from Amy Bowman and it was 40-37, forcing Eastern to call time out. Eastern would build the lead back to 48-41 when the Knights went on a 6-0 run. Farlow hit a bucket sandwiched between two Harnish buckets to make it 48-47. Two Eastern free throws and a bucket from Pegg made it 50-49 with 41 seconds remaining. Eastern would score 4 points the last 28 seconds to take a 54-49 lead with a quarter to go.
Eastern drew blood first in the fourth, before Kaley Harness and Farlow hit, making it 56-53. Eastern would score the next three points before Farlow hit a free throw, making it 59-54. The Comets would stretch the lead to 63-54, forcing Southwood to call time out. Out of the time out, White would connect and then hit two free throws to draw the Knights within five at 63-58. With 2:38 to go, Eastern would score three straight when Pegg drained two free throws with 1:43 to go,making it 66-60. At the 1:25 mark Eastern drained a three pointer to go up 69-60. Not giving up, the Knight defense calmped down, while Bowman, Farlow and Bowman again hit three straight buckets to make it 69-66 with 27.6 seconds left. The Knights stole the ball, but missed their insuing shot and fouled with 18.7 left. Eastern missed the free throw and the Knights raced for a shot, missing and fouling with 8.5 remaining. Eastern would sink both free throws to make it 71-66. Kaley Harness hit with 1 second left, making the final score 71-68.
Leading Southwood was Sarah White with 22 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assist. Ana Marie Farlow had 16 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block. Amy Bowman had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assist. Mollie Harnish had 7 points and 1 assist. Kaley Harness had 7 points. Jessica Pegg had 5 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Jaycie Wright had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Emily Murphy had 1 point and 1 rebound. Jenny Bentley had 2 assist.
