Maybe Rochester’s 2-9 record was a little deceiving or perhaps the Norse were looking past the Zebras and to Saturday night’s game vs Huntington. Both could be true or neither.
Northfield built a comfortable lead several times and then held their breath on a last second Rochester shot to defeat the Zebras 54-52 Friday night, moving their record to 12-3 (4-1).
The Norse started the game in full control, out scoring Rochester 16-7 in the first quarter. Rochester would battle back, closing the Northfield lead to three points before a layup at the buzzer by Ryan Givens gave the Norse a 29-24 halftime lead.
Rochester would score the first four points of the third quarter to close the gap to 29-28. Clinging to the small lead, Dustin Echard hit two buckets to push the Norse lead back to 37-29. Northfield would end the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 43-29 after three.
Rochester kept battling back with a barrage of three pointers to close the gap to 50-47 with 54.7 seconds remaining. After trading buckets and Rochester’s being a three, the Norse led 52-50 with 18.2 left. Collin Dawes hit two free throws with 11.3 remaining to put Northfield up 54-50. Rochester raced down the floor and converted on a layup, cutting the lead to 54-52 with 5.6 seconds left.. Rochester quickly fouled Chad Glasscock. Glasscock could not convert the free throws and Rochester had one more chance. Going for the win instead of the tie the Zebras launched a three pointer at the buzzer that missed and the Norse held on 54-52.
Ryan Keaffaber led the Norse with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Ryan Givens added 12 points and 7 rebounds, while Collin Dawes chipped in 10 points and 7 assists.
The JV boys basketball team collected a 35-26 win over Rochester. Jon Richardson led the Norse with 13 points and 2 steals, while Tanner Wilcox chipped in 10 points and 7 rebounds.

The Norse play Huntington North Saturday
