The Wabash boys basketball team was leading the TRC and needed a win to keep sole possession of first place. With the run and gun style of the Apaches you live by the old saying,”you live by the three and die by the three.” Unfortunately the latter was the case for the Apaches Friday as they shot just 2 of 21 from behind the arch in a 72-52 loss to Whitko.
Whitko started the game with a bucket that was answered by a Tyler Brewer bucket and then a three from Shea Beauchamp to lead 5-2. With Wabash leading 10-7 after a Landon Cole bucket the Wildcats went on a 12-0 run behind Alex Stoddard to grab a 19-10 lead and led 21-11 after the first quarter.
To start the second Logan Irwin and Stoddard would hit to increase the lead to 25-11 when Nate Price hit. At 25-14 Whitko would go on a 10-3 run, making it 35-17. Price would trade three free throws with an Irwin bucket to make it 37-20. Whitko led 39-22 at the half.
With the Apaches having the ability to make big runs, it looked like that could happen the first half of the third quarter when Wabash cut the lead to 45-31. Whitko would then go on a 9-0 run to dash any hopes of getting close by the fourth quarter. Breyton Nealis hit his third bucket of the quarter with a minute left and Whitko led 56-33 with one to go.
Whitko closed the door to start the fourth quarter, starting the quarter with a 9-0 run to make it 65-33. Wabash would then go on one of their runs, a 14-0 run that cut the lead to 65-47. Whitko would out score Wabash 7-5 the remainder of the game for the 72-52 final.
