The Wabash Lady Apache basketball team wanted to gain some momentum Thursday night at Maconaquah before going in to Tuesday’s first round sectional game against Oak Hill. The Apaches wasted no time gaining that momentum, taking off to a quick lead and defeating the Braves 58-27.
The Apaches started the game with three straight buckets, one each from Kyleigh Hampton, Marin Hill and a three from Kelsey Cromer to take off to a 7-0 lead. Hampton would hit with 2:29 to go to stretch the lead to 13-4 before two Maconaquah free throws. Up 13-6 the Apaches would go on a 7-0 run, all by Cromer to end the first quarter up 20-6. Cromer had 12 in the quarter.
In the first four minutes of the second quarter there were two total buckets, one by the Braves and one by Hampton. With 3:25 to go the Lady Apaches led 22-10. Cromer would then convert a three point play and follow that with another bucket to put the Apaches up 28-12. Charlie Pardo hit the final bucket of the half and Wabash led 30-14.
Maconaquah started the third quarter by cutting the Wabash lead to 33-19 before the Apaches went to work. Cromer would hit to make it 35-19 and Marin Hill followed with two free throws. After a Hampton bucket Wabash was up 40-20. Kalie Obenour and Cromer would hit back to back to stretch the lead to 44-20. Cromer was fouled on a missed three pointer with 1.3 seconds left in the quarter, hitting two of the three free throws and Wabash was up 48-22 with a quarter to go.
The first 3:20 of the fourth quarter went scoreless as neither team could find the bucket. Katelyn Vogel broke the ice with 4:40 to go. Up 51-22 a technical foul was called on the Maconaquah bench with Cromer hitting one of the free throws. On the possession off the tech, Cromer drained a three and it was 55-22. Maconaquah would out score Wabash 5-2 the last minute and a half as the Apaches rolled 58-27.
Leading Wabash was Kelsey Cromer with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assist and 1 steal. Kyleigh Hampton had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assist, 5 steals and 2 blocks. Marin Hill had 7 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. Katelyn Vogel had 4 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 7 steals. Kalie Obenour had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Charlie Pardo had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assist. Hannah Mullett had 1 rebound.
Wabash plays Oak Hill Tuesday in the first night of the Wabash sectional.
The Wabash JV defeated Maconaquah 31-19.
Kalie Obenour led with 11 points. Jaclyn Lewis had 10, Kristen Ford 6, Abby Stein 3 and Sarah Puckett 1.
