The Northfield girls basketball team was playing the Peru Tigers even up in the first half Wednesday, but costly third quarter turnovers plagued the Norse as they fell to Peru 46-35.
The Lady Norse had a hard time finding the bucket early Wednesday. After a missed shot and two missed free throws, Peru would go up 4-0. Freshman Arie Kennedy would then convert an old fashion three before Peru scored again to go up 6-3. Sidney Reed would then hit two free throws, followed by a Sydney Eltzroth bucket and the Norse were up 7-6. In the next two and a half minutes, Peru would go on an 8-0 run to go up 14-7. Eltzroth answered with a three and Reed was fouled at the buzzer, sinking both free throws and Peru led 14-12 after one.
To start the second quarter Reed would connect to knot the score at 14, then Katie Stephan picked the pocket of the Peru point guard, going in for a layup and the Norse were up 16-14. Tied at 16, Reed would hit back to back buckets to go up 20-16. Peru would score the last four points of the quarter and it was tied at 20 at the half.
Things would not go so good for the Norse to start the third quarter. Peru would score the first 8 points off 9 Northfield turnovers to go up 28-20. After two Eltzroth free throws the Norse would turn the ball over again, with Peru capitalizing to make it 31-22. Eltzroth hit to make it 31-24 with 1:47 left. the defense stopped the Tigers, but the offense committed their 11th turnover of the quarter. Caitlin Eltzroth would connect and despite 11 third quarter turnovers the Norse trailed just 31-26.
Reed would start the fourth quarter with two free throws to cut the lead to 31-28, but Peru answered with 4 points. Hanging in shooting free throws, Redd would hit another, followed by two from Sydney Eltzroth and it was 35-31 with 5:14 to play. After Peru scored the next three points, Arie Kennedy hit the lone Northfield bucket of the quarter to make it 38-33 with 3:43 to play. Peru would then go on an 8-0 run to make it 46-33. Cherish Leming hit two free throws with .35 left for the 46-35 final.
Leading Northfield was Sidney Reed with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. Sydney Eltzroth had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals and 1 block. Arie Kennedy had 5 points, 1 rebound and 4 steals. Caitlin Eltzroth had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Katie Stephan had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Cherish Leming had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Kylie Echard had 1 rebound and 1 block.
The Lady Norse had 25 turnovers.
