Second Half Comeback Leads Wabash Over Caston

The Wabash boys basketball team suffered a disappointing loss to North Miami Tuesday and looked as though for one half Saturday that the result was going to be the same. Wabash was hosting 14-3 Caston and at the end of the first half the Apaches trailed the Comets 33-24 before coming out and playing one of their best halves of basketball this year, coming back to defeat the Comets 65-54.

Shea Beauchamp got things started with two buckets to give the Apaches a 4-0 lead before the Comets come back to tie the score at 4. Breyton Nealis then hit, answered by Caston. The Comets would take the lead at 7-6 and increase the margin to 11-6 before Beauchamp and Tyler Brewer hit to make the first quarter score 11-10 Caston.

With Caston leading 16-13 Brewer would hit back to back buckets to give the Apaches a brief lead in the second, 17-16. Caston would score the next 5 points to go up 21-17 when Beauchamp nailed a three, making it 21-20. The Comets answered with two buckets and built the lead to 28-22 before another Brewer bucket. Caston would hit a three with 36.0 to go and then end the quarter with a bucket and led the Apaches 33-24 at the half.

Coming out of the locker room the Apaches knew they either had to score a bunch of points or hold Caston from scoring points. The Apaches opted for the latter, dominating on the defensive end, holding Caston to just 3 points in the quarter while scoring 13 and led the Comets 37-36 with a quarter to go. Wabash started the quarter with a Beauchamp bucket that was matched by Caston. Wabash would then finish the quarter with an 11-1 run. Beauchamp scored 8 points in the quarter that was aided by an Andrew Adamson three and a bucket from Nealis.

The Apaches started the fourth quarter with a free throw from Beauchamp and a bucket from Brewer to build their lead to 40-36 before Caston come back to tie the score. Beauchamp would hit two more buckets with Caston answering the call and the game was tied at 45. Tyler Brewer would then hit a bucket that ignited a 12-0 run, which ended with a Brewer bucket off a Nealis steal. Caston finally broke the run with a bucket and Wabash led 57-47 with 1:48 to go. The Comets would cut the lead to 8, but Beauchamp and Brewer quickly stopped any thoughts of a let down with buckets and the Apaches hit their free throws with the clock winding down and knocking off the Comets 65-54.
