Lady Apaches Open Sectional With Win Over Oak Hill

The Wabash Lady Apache basketball team was starting an attempt to win their 4th straight sectional Tuesday, hosting #11 Oak Hill in game one. The Lady Apaches controlled the game early, then had to come back in the 4th quarter to to edge the Eagles 40-34 and move to round two.

The first quarter would be a sign of what was going to happen all night, with each team building a lead and then the other come back.

Oak Hill would strike first to go up 2-0 when the Lady Apaches, ignited by a Kelsey Cromer three, went on a 9-0 run to jump out 9-2. Coming out of an Oak Hill time out, the Lady Eagles went on a 6-0 run to draw within 9-8 after one.

The lead would change four times early in the second until Cromer drained her second three of the game to go up 14-12. Kyleigh Hampton would back Cromer up with a three and Wabash led 17-12. Oak Hill would craw back within 17-15 when Cromer hit, followed by a back door bucket from Claire Cromer to Marin Hill to push the lead back to 21-15. Oak Hill would hit two free throws to end the scoring in the second and Wabash led 21-17 at the half.

Oak Hill would score first in the third, answered by a Marin Hill bucket to make it 23-19. Kelsey Cromer picked up her third foul with 6:19 to go and Oak Hill called time out to set up plays to go at her. Oak Hill would hit the next two buckets to take the lead at 24-23. Katelyn Vogel was then fouled, hitting both free throws to give the lead back to Wabash 25-24. Oak Hill answered with two buckets to take the lead back at 29-25 before Marin Hill hit to make it 29-27 after three.

Cromer would hit to start the scoring in the fourth and tie the score at 29. A Kyleigh Hampton block led to a Katelyn Vogel bucket and the Apaches were up 31-29. Hampton would back up her block with back to back buckets, the second off a steal and Wabash stretched the lead to 35-29 with 3:27 to go. The tenacious Wabash defense would stop Oak Hill and on the next possession Cromer drove to convert and Wabash was up 37-29. With 1:38 to go Oak Hill converted a three point play to make it 37-32 and they began to foul. After a Wabash over and back call, Oak Hill missed and Hill grabbed the rebound, calling time out with 56.6 left. Wabash came out of the time out and threw the ball away and point guard Claire Cromer picked up her fifth foul. Oak Hill would hit, cutting the lead to 37-34 and called time out with 39.7 left. Out of the time out the Eagles fouled Marin Hill with 33.6. Hill calmly sank both free throws to put Wabash up 39-34. Oak Hill had two more attempts for buckets that failed, while Hill hit one more free throw for the 40-34 final.

The win matches Wabash against Lewis Cass in the first game Friday. The Apaches defeated Cass 48-29 on Jan. 18th.

Leading Wabash was Kelsey Cromer with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assist. Marin Hill had 11 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. Kyleigh Hampton had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 blocks. Katelyn Vogel had 4 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. Claire Cromer had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. Kalie Obenour had 1 rebound.
