It was night two at the Wabash girls basketball sectional, with three of the four teams being from the county and the other in the TRC, so the teams were familiar with each other, creating nail biters in both games. Game one went to the buzzer between Southwood and Manchester, with the Squires hitting two free throws with 5.2 seconds remaining to defeat Southwood 50-46. In game two Northfield had to stop North Miami on six possessions in the last minute to nip the Warriors 29-28.
In game one it was all Southwood in the first quarter as the Lady Knights took off to a 9-0 start and led 13-4 after one. Southwood had five players score in the quarter.
Manchester would claw their way back in the second, using the whole quarter to catch up, with Kaylee Watson hitting two free throws with 2.6 left to give the Squires a 21-20 half time lead. Kayla Flack had 7 and Watson 6 in the quarter. Sarah White had 5 for Southwood.
Southwood’s Kaley Harness started the scoring in the third to put the Knights up one, before the Squires went on a 6-0 run to take a 27-22 lead. At 30-24 the Knights went on their own 6-0 run to knot the score at 30. Manchester would out score Southwood 4-2 the last 1:15 to lead 36-34 with a quarter to go.
Southwood tied the score twice early in the fourth on buckets from Harness and White before Hannah Little hit a free throw that started a 9-2 run for the Squires and they led 47-40. Behind White and Emily Murphy the Knights clawed their way back and were within one at 47-46 with 1:40 to play. Manchester would miss two shots on their next possession, with the Knights getting the rebound and Hannah Little making a steal and getting fouled. Little hit one free throw to make it 48-46 with 48.5 left. The Knights would miss several shot attempts in a wild scramble to tie the score, with Manchester getting the rebound and the Knights fouling Meika Kennedy with 5.2 remaining. Kennedy converted both free throws to seal the 50-46 win.
Leading Manchester was Kayla Flack with 19 points, 1 assist and 5 rebounds. Kaylee Watson had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Hannah Little had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 1 steal. Meika Kennedy had 2 points, 8 assist, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Bekah Brunn had 2 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. Autumn Brewer had 2 points and 1 rebound. Hannah Schmidt had 1 point and 1 rebound. Malyssa Bedke had 1 assist, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
For Southwood Sarah White had 15 points and 6 rebounds. Kaley Harness had 12 points and 1 steal. Emily Murphy had 6 points. Ana Marie Farlow had 4 points and 7 rebounds. Jessica Pegg had 3 points, 2 assist, 1 steal and 3 blocks. Jaycee Wright had 2 points and 1 steal. Amy Bowman had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assist. Katie Stouffer had 2 points.
Game two pitted Northfield against North Miami and ended up with a tighter margin than the first game, with Northfield winning 29-28.
With both teams having the sectional jitters, scoring was not at a premium in the first quarter. Neither team could find the bucket and with 2:38 to go it was tied at 1-1. The combined shooting was 0 of 14 with 1:10 to go when Cherish Leming hit for the Norse and gave them a 3-1 lead after one.
Sydney Eltzroth nailed a three to start the second quarter, followed by a bucket from Sidney Reed and the Norse were up 8-1. At 10-4 North Miami fought back and got to within three at 11-8. Katie Stephan would then hit Northfield’s second three of the quarter and the Norse led 14-9 at the half.
North Miami would make their charge in the third quarter, out scoring the Norse 9-4 to tie the score at 18 after three. Kylie Echard scored 3 of the Norse 4 points.
Since leading 1-0, North Miami took their first lead to start the fourth, going up 20-18 before Echard tied it with two free throws. The Warriors would build the lead back to three points, when Echard hit two more free throws, followed by a bucket and gave the Norse a 25-24 lead. Arie Kennedy would stretch the lead to 27-24 before the Warriors drained a three to knot the score at 27. North Miami went up 28-27 with 1:39 to go, when freshman Kennedy hit again to give the Norse the lead back at 29-28 with 1:00 to play. Northfield then forced a five second call and with 21.4 left called timeout. Coming out of the time out, the Norse threw a bad pass which created a jump ball. The possession arrow was in favor of the Norse, which ended up with another bad pass, giving the ball to North Miami with 15.7 remaining. On the end bounds pass, North Miami stepped out of bounds, giving the ball back to Northfield with 12.0 left. The Warriors then stole the ball with their press and missed their shot with the ball going out of bounds. Northfield had it again with 6.5 left and for the third time in less than a minute, threw a bad pass with 5.3 left. On the inbounds play the Norse returned the favor with a steal and come away with the 29-28 victory.

Arie Kennedy had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Cherish Leming had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 1 block. Katie Stephan had 3 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Sidney Reed had 3 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block. Caitlin Eltzroth had 2 rebounds and 3 steals.
