Friday night was the semi finals of the Wabash girls sectional with Wabash and Lewis Cass playing in game one and Manchester and Northfield battling in game two. In game one Wabash defeated Lewis Cass 52-26 and Northfield topped Manchester 51-36 in game two to set up the Wabash, Northfield final Saturday night.
In game one the Lady Apaches left no doubt, jumping on Cass early with a 6-1 lead. Up 11-5 after two Kelsey Cromer buckets the Lady Apaches finished the quarter scoring the last 7 points to lead 18-5 after one. Cromer scored 5 of the last 7 points and 10 in the quarter.
Wabash started the second quarter with a 10-0 run, started by Charlie Pardo. Kelsey Cromer had 7 of the next 8 Apache points. Marin Hill also added a free throw. Wabash led 28-7 at the half.
Cass would start the second quarter with a bucket before Cromer answered with a three to put the Apaches up 31-9. Cass would score the next four points, when Kyleigh Hampton found the range behind the arch to extend the Wabash lead back to 34-14. Cass ended up out scoring Wabash 13-10 in the quarter and Wabash was cruising 38-20 with a quarter to go.
Wabash would out score Cass 14-6 in the final quarter as they worked the ball to take time off the clock. The Apaches had five players score in the quarter, led by Hampton’s four points as they cruised to the 52-26 final.
Leading Wabash was Kelsey Cromer with 22 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assist and 1 block. Kyleigh Hampton had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal and 3 blocks. Marin Hill had 6 points, 15 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 steals. Claire Cromer had 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. Katelyn Vogel had 3 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 steal. Charlie Pardo had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Sarah Puckett had 2 points and 1 rebound. Kalie Obenour had 1 assist.
Game two had two Wabash county teams pitted against each other as Manchester took on Northfield.
Northfield would start the scoring on a Katie Stephan bucket, followed by one from Kylie Echard to give the Lady Norse a 4-0 lead. Kayla Flack would then hit the lone Squire bucket of the first quarter to cut the lead in half before Northfield would go on a 13-1 run to end the quarter. Freshman Arie Kennedy would hit back to back buckets before Sydney Eltzroth would chime in to make it 13-3. Kennedy would then finish the quarter with two buckets and Northfield led 17-3.
Again, Stephan would start the scoring, this time with a free throw before Flack answered with a bucket. After two Sidney Reed free throws, Hannah Little would hit for Manchester to make it 20-7. Coming out of a Manchester time out, Flack hit again and then the Squire defense forced a 5 second call. Meika Kennedy capitalized on the Norse mistake and it was 20-11 with 2:00 to go. The youthful Norse would hang on with two free throws from Stephan and one from Kennedy to lead 23-12 at the half.
The third quarter was going to be interesting, as the fear the Norse had in their face on Wednesday was a look of determination Friday and Manchester was a veteran team that had been in this situation before.
The third quarter would start with Eltzroth and Stephan connecting to extend the Norse lead to 27-12, forcing Manchester to call an early timeout with 6:44 to play. Hannah Schmidt would hit to free throws to get the Squires on the board when Reed and Little traded buckets to make it 29-16. After a Manchester turn over, Arie Kennedy converted a three point play and after a Flack bucket was answered with an Eltzroth three and it was obvious the Norse were not going to fold, leading 36-18. The Norse led 38-18 after three.
Caitlin Eltzroth would score the first three points to start the fourth quarter as the Norse built their lead to 40-18. Bekah Brunn would hit for Manchester to start a 9-2 run for the Squires to get the lead under 20 at 42-24. After some exchanged free throws and two buckets from Flack the Squires had cut the to 44-32 with 1:58 to play. The Norse gathered their composure and with some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch from Sydney Eltzroth held on for the 51-36 win.
Leading Northfield was Arie Kennedy with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Sydney Eltzroth had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assist. Katie Stephan had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assist and 3 steals. Sidney Reed had 6 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assist and 1 steal. Kylie Echard had 5 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assist and 7 blocks. Caitlin Eltzroth had 3 points and Michelle Hendricks added 2 points.
Leading Manchester was Kayla Flack with 18 points, 2 assist, 11 rebounds and 1 steal. Meika Kennedy had 6 points, 1 assist, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Hannah Little had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Hannah Schmidt had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Bekah Brunn had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Malyssa Bedke had 1 point, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Lindsey Budnik had 1 steal.
Wabash and Northfield meet for the sectional title at 7:30 Saturday
