Hunter Wells wrestling at 152 lbs earned his first birth to the Individual State Wrestling Finals by placing 2nd at the Fort Wayne Snider Semi-state. His first round state match Friday night was with Luke Kriech from Franklin Community High School. The whole first period of the match was spent on their feet, both wrestlers vying for position. Hunter had several close takedown shots but came up short. The second period found Hunter choosing down and securing the first point of the match with an escape. Later in the second Kriech got an important takedown and road Hunter out the rest of the period. In the third period Kriech chose down and secured an escape and later a takedown to end the scoring at 1-5 in favor of Luke Kriech. Hunter continued to move and wrestle hard throughout the third period but couldn’t manage to score much needed points. Kriech would go on to place second in the State behind Isaiah Bradley who beat Hunter in the finals of the Semi-state.
Hunter Wells ends his senior campaign with only three losses. His first loss came to an eventual state qualifier and his next two came from the first and second place wrestlers in the State meet in his weight class. His season record ends at 35-3 and his career record ends at 111-23. This puts him as the fourth all time winningest wrestler at Northfield. Congratulations go to Hunter on a great season and a fantastic career of wrestling at Northfield.
Quote(s) by Coach __Gary Norman______: Hunter was disappointed with the outcome of the match with Kriech, but looking at the end results he should be pretty proud of his wrestling this year. He has only three losses this year and all came from State qulifiers. His last two losses came from the number one and two placers in the state at his weight class. I would say that is impressive for any wrestler. Hunter will be greatly missed in the wrestling room.
