Big Third Inning Lifts Apaches Over Oak Hill

The #7 Wabash Apache baseball team used a big third inning to propel themselves past Oak Hill Monday 9-3 and improve their season record to 4-1.

Once again, Andrew Shepherd dominated on the mound while the offense exploded at the plate. To set the tone in the top of the first after a Wabash two out error, catcher Nate Price gunned down the base runner at first trying to steal second. Wabash wasted no time making Oak Hill pay with lead off hitter Landon Cole hitting an inside the park home run to give the Apaches a 1-0 lead.

Shepherd got in to a little trouble in the second, giving up a lead off double and then a walk before forcing two ground balls and a pop up to get out of the inning. Thomas McHaney started the second with a triple and Jordan Floor drove him home and the Apaches led 2-0 after two.

Shepherd faced just three batters in the third before the Apache eruption. With one out, Cole tripled and Nate Price brought him home with a grounder to short. Shepherd singled, followed by a Shea Beauchamp double and Wabash had runners on second and third. McHaney hit a grounder to short that was thrown away and two runs scored, 5-0. Floor then singled home McHaney after an Oak Hill error in the outfield, 6-0. Justin Holley singled home Floor and Wabash led 6-0 after three.

Oak Hill finally got on the board in the fourth, making Wabash pay for an error to make it 6-1, but the Apaches quickly made up that run with a Cole walk and a Shepherd rbi single, 8-1.

With two outs in the fifth the Apaches committed an error and the Eagles made them pay with a triple to score their second run and make it 8-2. Although Wabash got two on in the fifth, Devin Bitzel and Colt Bayliss, Wabash failed to score.

Oak Hill manufactured a run in the top of the sixth to make it 8-3 and Wabash would answer again. With two outs and a runner on first, Mchaney singled before a Floor rbi double and it was 9-3.

Shepherd buckled down in the seventh, striking out two of the three outs as the Apaches improved to 4-1.
