Norse Take Two From Marion

The Northfield baseball team took a double header from Marion Saturday. The Norse downed the Giants 4-2 in game one and backed it up with an 8-2 win in game two.

In game one neither team could break the ice until the Norse manufactured two runs in the bottom of the third. Collin Dawes drew a walk and stole second.  Dawes then advanced to third on wild pitch. Adam Roser walked and steals second.  Tanner Chamberlain hit a sac fly to left, scoring Dawes (1-0). Andy Roser then singled home his brother Adam, (2-0). Ryan Keaffaber singled and Austin Keen was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Marion got out of the inning.

Marion tied the game in the fourth with a two run home run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Andy Roser singled and steals second with one out.  Ryan Keaffaber walked and Roser advanced to third on a wild pitch during the at bat.  Keaffaber steals second.  Austin Keen then singled up the middle to drive in Roser and the Norse led 3-2. Keaffaber moved to third on the play at home and Joseph Ross made them pay with an rbi single, making it 4-2.

Marion threatened in the seventh with a lead off single and a throwing error to have runners on first and second with no outs. Chamberlain then struck out the next three batters to end the game.

Tanner Chamberlain picked up the win on the mound.

Uggen:  “I thought Tanner (Chamberlain) had a great effort on the mound especially over the last 2-3 innings.  His velocity picked up a bit and he found his curve and had great success from that point on (struck out 8 over last 4 innings).  Andy Roser found his rhythm again which was big for us.  We stole a lot of bases which should have lead to more runs but we just couldn’t get a 2-out hit when we needed it.  We are still striking out too much with runners in scoring position which is disappointing but we will get better.

In game two Marion struck first right off the bat. In the top of the first Smith was hit by a pitch to start game. Sheward hit an 0-2 pitch down left field line and Smith scores. After a sacrifice fly, Marion led 2-0.

In the bottom of the first, Adam Roser lead off with a  single. Tanner Chamberlain walked and both move up on passed ball. Andy Roser’s 2rbi triple to right center made it 2-2.  Ryan Keaffaber drove in Roser with a sac fly to center, making it 3-2. Austin Keen was hit by a pitch and Joseph Ross singled Keen to second.  Collin Dawes laid down a bunt for a base hit to load the bases. Ethan Stouffer put down the perfect safety squeeze, Keen scores (4-2). Northfield would score two more and led 6-2 after one.

In the third, Chamberlain lead off with a triple to left center and then Andy Roser blasted a  2 run homer to left center, making it 8-2.

Both offenses started to struggle the last few innings because of the rain and the Norse held the 8-2 lead for the final.

Uggen:  “Obviously, I was a little concerned about Joseph’s start but he pitched well after the first couple batters and really pitched a great game.  To walk only one batter considering it rained much of the last 4-5 innings is pretty impressive.  Andy (Roser) continued to swing a hot bat to lead us offensively.  I thought the safety squeeze by Ethan (Stouffer) was huge because we’d been pretty unsuccessful in game one getting the ball in play so we tried something difference and it gave us the 4 run early lead.  We have to continue to find ways to get runners across the plate and we did a better job in game two.   Overall, I thought we played pretty well considering the conditions, couple good wins for us.
