Seven Seed Manchester Tops Second Seed Washington & Jefferson 13-3 in Opening Game of NCAA Mideast Regional

Manchester’s baseball team posted a 13-3 win over Washington & Jefferson in the opening game of the 2012 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Wednesday night.  Manchester jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the top half of the first inning, but W&J tied the game with three runs heading into the second. Manchester picked up three more runs in the second, two in the third and four runs in the fourth to go ahead 12-3, and added a single run in the top of the sixth to take the 13-3 win.

Justin Scott pitched eight solid innings, striking out nine batters on the day and surrendered just seven hits and two earned runs. Caleb McAfee added one strikeout with an inning of relief pitching in the ninth. Cody Schell had the hot bat for Manchester, going 3-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jordan Nieman went 1-3 with three RBIs, Corey Marchant, recently named HCAC Player of the Year was 2-5 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Austin Rieke had two RBIs and a run, while Robert Heritz finished 2-4 with an RBI.

Manchester improves to 26-20 on the year,  and will face #3 seed Adrian (36-8) starting at 8 p.m. on Thursday from Marietta College in the second round of NCAA Division III Mideast Regional action.
